It’s not easy to arrange the Borderlands games in chronological order. The timeline is frequently jumped around in each brand-new episode. Borderlands can be played in any order, but knowing their relative timing is useful.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is yet another spin-off game from the Borderlands series. With inspiration from Assault on Dragon Keep, one of Borderlands 2’s most recognizable DLCs, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands has given the Borderlands series a completely new perspective. It can be difficult to determine when in the timeline Wonderlands takes place because it is a significant spin-off of the Borderlands series. While Tiny Tina in Borderlands 3 was considerably older, the D&D-inspired Wonderlands shows the bomb-obsessed heroine as she was in Borderlands 2.
Since it’s release in 2009, the Borderlands series has featured games that build upon one another by adding fresh plotlines, lore, and loot. The series’s most recent main entry, Borderlands 3, integrated characters from Tales from the Borderlands, a Telltale game, into the main plot. Even after it was released in 2012, Borderlands 2 has continued to receive updates. In order to connect the events of Borderlands 2 and 3, an expansion titled Commander Lilith and the Fight for Sanctuary was made available for Borderlands 3. Recently, Assault on Dragon Keep was rereleased as a stand-alone game, providing background information for players who want to play Wonderlands without playing Borderlands 2.
Here is a list of the Borderlands games in chronological order as it has been updated to reflect this most recent release.
List of the All Borderlands games in chronological order
Release date: 20th October 2009
The story begins with a vault and characters who spend their entire lives seeking out the Vault’s legendary status without knowing whether it is true or not.
Unexpectedly, four vault hunters discovered a piece of the Vault key with the aid of a mystic guardian angel.
The Vault Finders had to battle their way through skags, psychos, and soldiers in order to find the other pieces of the key. With the help of the angel, the finders were finally able to put the key together. But the Crimson Lance, the Atlas Corporation’s personal army, took the key away.
The Army opened the Vault and discovered unimaginable riches inside, including powerful weapons and extraterrestrial technology. An alien with lasers and tentacles that threatened to consume the universe materialized in the Vault, turning it into a nightmare.
The game’s innovative content generation system is complemented by an intriguing weapons system with unlimited item drops.
Players are introduced to a number of characters in the game, including Mordecai, Roland, Lilith, and Brick. Different roles are played by each player in the game. The game also has a distinctive art style in which the player assumes the role of a treasure hunter to complement the narrative. You have the option of playing the two-player split-screen co-op locally or the four-player co-op online.
Like most other popular video game series, Borderlands was an instant hit with gamers and critics upon it’s initial release.
The Border Lands
Release date: 23rd August 2012
The Border Lands served as a prequel to the upcoming Borderlands 2 video game. The game pretends that The Border Lands was first released on home consoles in the 1980s and has a deliberately retro feel.
Even though the game has a retro aesthetic, the playable characters are identical to those in the upcoming Borderlands 2.
The game has a top-down shooter theme and four characters, each of whom has a unique set of abilities.
Each character starts the game with a standard pistol that can be upgraded using the chests that appear when you defeat particular enemies.
The object of the game is for the player to survive through numerous waves of enemies while gathering enough money to achieve a high score before their life runs out.
The game is well made for a marketing ploy, which gives players an idea of what to anticipate in Borderlands 2.
Release date: 18th September 2012
Borderlands 2, an open-world first-person role-playing shooter game, was the third iteration of the Borderlands series from Gearbox.
The new game included a number of new upgrades and additions over the original, including new characters, abilities, tools, enemies, settings, and equipment. Additionally, the entirely new plotline featuring a number of recognisable characters cannot be ignored.
Five years after the original game’s release, the story of Borderlands 2 begins. Handsome Jack, who wants to take control of Pandora, is the game’s main foe. He recruits four new vault hunters to locate the Vault. While they’re riding the train, Jack betrays them.
Borderlands 2’s loot is the most intriguing aspect. With guns making up the majority of the loot, there is always something better waiting for the player after they defeat a boss.
You can repeatedly redistribute skill points in the game after trying out various skills. With the new ranking system in the game, you have many options for further customizing the combat, which has a slightly different feel.
Release date: 31st October 2012
For the iOS operating system, there is a version called Borderlands Legend. The game heavily incorporates elements from the first Borderlands and even makes use of it’s original cast of characters. In line with Borderlands, every character has their own arsenal of weapons and kill zones.
To deal with the waves of enemies that come their way, players in the game take up positions on the map that are strategically placed. Every time you play, the game will surprise you because some mission components are chosen at random.
Undoubtedly, the original Borderlands serves as an inspiration for legends. Nevertheless, it accomplishes just enough to establish it’s own identity and, most importantly, to give players an immersive and interactive experience.
The Borderlands collection received a special edition on 12th December 2013. It was LootTheWorld from Borderlands. Instead of being a game, expansion, or Collection, it was a QR Code mobile app for iOS and Android that let users scan barcodes and QR codes to unlock items that could then be added to the game using a SHiFT account. On 18th October 2015, the intriguing app was, however, removed from the market.
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel!
Release date: 14th October 2014
The Prequel takes place between Borderlands’ conclusion and Handsome’s debut. New Vault Hunters are featured in the game, and one of them, Jack, a modest programmer, helps them in their dark and covert quest for power by hiring them.
There were other intriguing details about The Pre-Sequel in addition to the new plot. It was the first game whose lead developer was not Gearbox. Instead, 2K Australia and Gearbox collaborated to create the game in it’s entirety.
The Pre-Sequel shares some gameplay elements, such as first-person shooter and role-playing game elements, with Borderlands 2.
It differs from Borderlands 2 in some ways as well, including some features and additions. These include the game’s Elpis setting, high jumps and better air control for players, and the cool butt slam attack manoeuvres.
The challenge of playing on the moon is distinct. Except for one robot character named “Clap Trap,” there isn’t enough oxygen when exploring.
Tales From The Borderlands
Release date: 25th November 2014
Tales from the Borderlines approach the typical Borderlands theme from a slightly different but just as enjoyable angle. A reluctant group of ordinary people attempts to find financial success in the hostile world of Pandora in this five-part sci-fi point-and-click adventure game.
Gearbox searched for assistance in creating the game once more, but this time they acquired it from Telltale, who produced a fantastic new release.
The story of the game is set in the same world as the first-person shooter Borderlands series. Rhys and Fiona are the two main characters in the game. Each of the episodes gives viewers a glimpse into the two protagonists’ antics.
- Episode 1: Zer0 Sum
A deal goes horribly wrong, forcing Rhys, a Hyperion employee, to team up with a notorious con artist Fiona in order to find the money they both believe is theirs.
- Episode 2: Atlas Mugged
Rhys tries to elude Handsome. While Hyperion and the August are close behind them, Jack struggles and tries to learn more about Gorty’s Project.
- Episode 3: Catch A Ride
Rhys and Fiona encounter Queenpin Vallory, the criminal, as they search through the jungles of an Atlas terraforming facility for the next clue that will lead them to the Vault.
- Episode 4: Escape Plan Bravo
To obtain the upcoming Gortys upgrade, Queenpin Vallory makes Rhys and Fiona travel to Helios.
- Episode 5: The Vault Of The Traveller
Handsome Jack seizes control of the Hyperion, revealing the location of the Vault and the stranger. It feels like déjà vu.
The game was expected to do well at first. Because of various factors, the game’s developer admitted that only a small team of people worked on the final episodes.
Borderlands: The Handsome Collection
Release date: 24th March 2015
Even though The Handsome Collection isn’t exactly a well-known event, it was noteworthy and merited a spot here.
A better version of Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Prequel was created for this game. Additionally, it includes all of the DLC for both games for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 that were made available as of 24th March 2015.
Players can expect a few pleasant surprises in the remaster, including a four-player split-screen option and a cross-save feature that lets users save games from other devices and platforms to the one they are currently playing.
Players are given a huge amount of playthrough options in The Handsome Collection. Try to do everything, though it might not be a good idea. Focus on the best content instead, such as the main story campaigns or powerful add-ons like Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep or the Claptastic Voyage.
The Handsome Voyage has the drawback that in order to fight the enemies, characters must be of a sufficient level. With a meagre arsenal, you’re only setting yourself up for defeat.
Another Borderlines collection game called Borderlines Online was planned for release in 2015 after the Handsome Collection. The Aforementioned Collection was supposed to be a PC and mobile shooter game made specifically for China by 2K China and Gearbox. The game was, however, cancelled due to concerns about profitability in late November 2015.
Release date: 13th September 2019
Borderlands 3 was the worst-kept secret ever before it was made public. Twitter rands, a never-ending feud with Claptrap, and even a lost USB stick were all part of the launch build-up.
The game’s plot takes place in a recognizable setting in Pandora, which is currently being overrun by bandits and is in danger of collapsing.
The only distinction is that this time, you can also travel to a number of diverse and breathtakingly beautiful planets.
Like previous Borderlands, every planet’s deepest crevices are full of chests and collectibles that entice you to keep exploring.
The game introduces you to four protagonists, each of whom has a diverse set of skill trees and level-uppable abilities. Tyreen and Troy Calypso, your adversaries, are right on your heels at the same time.
You’ll enjoy Borderlands 3 if you enjoy shooting things. There are many guns in the game. Finding the ideal rifle for you is simple, but there are so many choices available that you may no longer be certain of the ideal firearm. The game is incredibly wild and action-packed, satisfying the gaming needs of any player.
On the other hand, Borderline 3’s technical quality is subpar for a game in the twenty-first century, particularly with regard to inventory management. The interface is a little disorganized and has a lot of numbers, which could easily distract you from the game.
The lag on the inventory screen has also been an issue for some gamers. Even though it initially appears to be a minor problem, splitting the screen makes it worse.
Despite the numerous issues, this game is still fantastic and everyone should try it.
Borderlands: Legendary Collection
Release date: 29th May 2020
Legendary Collection, an action-packed first-person shooter game, was recently announced as the newest instalment in the Borderlands franchise.
Borderlands, Borderlands 2, and Borderlands: The Prequel will all be included in the release, which is created for the Nintendo Switch.
The game should support motion control and run at 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second.
The legendary Collection promises three times the mayhem, three times the action, and even more loot. There will be monsters, bandits, and powerful weapons to slay.
Gamers who appreciate value will find the new Collection to be quite the catch because it is anticipated to add up to 100 hours of gameplay.
To port the classic games to the Switch in HD without reusing older assets, Gearbox turned to another developer, 2K. The new release will undoubtedly go down in history.
It’s impossible to point out any bugs in the game at this time because it has only been announced and is not yet available.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
Release date: 25th March 2022
The game, like it’s predecessors, combines first-person shooting with elements of a role-playing action game. In online or local split-screen multiplayer, the game can be played by one person or up to three other people.
The game takes place in a fantasy-themed tabletop role-playing game’s fictional world. The playable characters in the game can travel around an overworld that connects the game’s various locales. Only in the overworld can you complete quests and engage in sporadic combat.
Tiny In addition to adhering to the Borderlands franchise’s standards, Tina’s Wonderlands also deviates in a number of significant ways. Players create their own characters using the game’s character creator system rather than taking on the role of a specific vault hunter with their own personality and voice lines.
Players can now mix and match these skills for their characters from the six available character classes in the game for the first time in the series.
With assistance from Lost Boys Interactive, Gearbox Software created Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands.
The franchise for Borderlands has been seamless and prosperous. The developers avoided disaster by avoiding having a single game that underperformed by continuously adjusting the game and fiddling with it’s visuals and plot. Nevertheless, even that did not result in a loss.
It will be interesting to see what Borderlands fans can expect from the upcoming launches. Will there be brand-new characters, a planet, loot, or perhaps even some innovative new technical features?
