Apple Users May Soon Invoke Siri With Just One Phrase

To let users invoke Siri in a more simplified manner, Apple is reportedly working to cut down the trigger phrase from “Hey, Siri” to just “Siri – as noted by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

This change is expected to be announced at the upcoming WWDC event, where Apple is rumored to launch it’s much-awaited MR headset too. While talks about Apple revamping Siri’s trigger phrase since last year, Gurman’s reiteration now makes us believe the change is near.

Waking Up the Apple Voice Assistant

One of the many features that Apple fans boast about their ecosystem – when compared to Android – is their native voice assistant, Siri. Apple’s voice assistant is cool and slightly better accurate than Google Assistant.

While it’s good enough to catch most phrases and do the intended work, Apple is bettering it by cutting down the trigger phrase to just one word. As reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in November last year, Apple may soon cut down the “Hey, Siri” trigger phrase to just “Siri“.

This was now reiterated with a tweet hinting at the imminent launch. While there’s no specific time frame given for this change, we expect this to be announced in the upcoming WWDC event – hoping that Apple is working on this.

Making this change possible needs a significant amount of AI training and underlying engineering work of Siri.

“The complexity involves Siri being able to understand the singular phrase “Siri” in multiple different accents and dialects. Having two words — “Hey Siri” — increases the likelihood of the system properly picking up the signal.”

If done successfully, Apple’s Siri will be on par with Amazon’s “Alexa”, which too can be invoked with just a single word. As Apple is also rumored to launch a mixed-reality headset at the WWDC, the betterment of it’s native voice assistant goes in as a hand-in-hand idea.
