God of War – 2005 (Main Series/console) – Greek Mythology era

It is the original game that debuted in 2005 and was released on The PlayStation 2. The game first introduced Kratos as a Spartan warrior of the Olympian gods. On the other hand, the goddess Athena was there in the gameplay who ordered the protagonist to kill Ares. The main protagonist of the gameplay, Kratos, has a hatred for Ares as this antagonist murdered his family. Now, to reach the goal, Kratos needs to find Pandora’s box before Ares destroys Athens City. In the complete journey, the protagonist needs to fight against hundreds of enemies and plenty of bosses.

The 3D combo-based directional combat makes this gameplay even more interesting. The gameplay combos come with the main weapon of the player, which are the blades of chaos. There is also a secondary weapon that comes with upgrades, quick action cinematics and several magic attacks.

God of War II – 2007 (Main Series/console)

It is the second instalment of the gameplay, which was released in 2007 for PlayStation 2 only. The primary gameplay of the second instalment was similar to the original title. Players need to play this as Kratos and the whole gameplay was set in ancient Greece. According to the story of this instalment, Ares is now dead and Zeus, the boss/king of gods, strips Kratos from the god status and sends him to the Underworld. Here the story begins as Kratos starts a mythical journey to get revenge on Zeus.

It was a mobile action-adventure game offered by Javaground. It debuted in 2007 for phones that support Java ME. The gameplay did justice to the actual title. According to the storyline, Kratos, the God of war, is now framed for killing the primordial giant Argos.

It is a 2D side-scrolling game. The combos are quite similar to the actual gameplay, and they are also puzzles and platforming segments that make the gameplay even more interesting.

God of War: Chains of Olympus – 2008 (Main Series / handheld)

This Ready at Dawn and Santa Monica Studio title debuted in 2008 for the PlayStation portable only. The storyline of this gameplay is similar to the original title and the plot was set 10 years before the opening events. According to the storyline, Kratos is a disciple of the goddess Athena. He is now on a mission to find The Sun god Helios to wake up other gods from a mysterious and secretive slumber.

There is not much difference in the gameplay. The gameplay revolves around combos. As the primary weapon, players have the blades of chaos. There are several secondary weapons. The developers have added puzzles, quick time events, bosses and platforming segments to make the gameplay more interesting.

God of War Collection – 2009 (Bundle)

This instalment is a collection that packs remastered ports of God of War and God of War II. It was released on the PlayStation 3 in 2009 as a single Blu-ray Disc.

God of War III – 2010 (Main Series/console)

It is the third main entry of the game that debuted in 2010 and was released on the PlayStation 3. It is the last story in the Greek era. According to the storyline, Kratos went back in time to stop Zeus from betraying him. To defeat his own father, Kratos needs to find Pandora to open Pandora’s box and murder the King of gods, Zeus.

It is another Ready at Dawn GoW title that debuted for the PlayStation portable in 2010. According to the storyline of the gameplay, Kratos now explores his human past and goes back to Atlantis to find his origins. Here, he finds his mother Callisto, who requests him to save his lost brother, Deimos.

The gameplay includes similar mechanics as the previous PlayStation portable entry. There are some magical abilities, quick-time events, platforming segments, puzzles and bosses.

God of War: Origins Collection – 2011 (Bundle)

This instalment remastered the PSP titles- Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta. This debuted on PlayStation 3 in 2011. This first introduced DualShock 3 rumble features to the games. It came with 1080p resolution, 60fps and anti-aliased graphics as well.

Now, the protagonist needs to escape, comfort his wardens and free himself from the tricks of Ares.

The main weapon of this gameplay is the Blades of chaos. There are also magical attacks, platforming, puzzles and power-ups. The developers have included new skills, movements, mechanics and promptless quick-time events in the gameplay.

God of War Collection (Vita) – 2014 (Bundle)

These bundle packs come with God of War I HD Remaster and God of War II HD Remaster. This was released in 2014 for PlayStation Vita.

God of War III Remastered – 2015 (Remaster)

God of War: A Call from the Wilds – 2018 (Spin-off)

It is a specially-designed text-based spin-off that was developed for Facebook Messenger. It was more like a marketing experiment or campaign to promote God of War by using the most famous social media platform.

It came with a short story according to which, Kratos’ son Atreus goes on an adventure in the Norse wilds. He has already learned the talent of runes and archery from his mother. He is going on this adventure to find a dying dear he heard with his telepathy. In the story, Kratos needs to save him in the mountains from the enemies.

God of War: Mimir’s Vision – 2018 (Spin-off)

This version was developed for ARCore Android 7.0 or newer versions, iOS smartphones and tablets. It was a mobile AR app that debuted in 2018 as a companion app for the main gameplay.

The game allows users to explore the map to figure out the points of interest, lore and stories behind the adventure of Kratos’ Norse. Players are led through the action from a river pass to a mountain top to display the forthcoming game’s map.

God of War – 2018 (Main Series/console) – Norse Mythology Era

This instalment debuted in 2018 for the PlayStation 4. Later on January 22, it came on Windows PC and in February 2021, it was released for PS5 users. The instalment comes with up to 2160p resolution at 60 fps or 4K at 30 fps.

With this part, the game introduces the Norse Mythology setting. In this part, the secondary protagonist of the gameplay is introduced to the main game series, who is Atreus(Kratos’ son. The antagonist of the gameplay is Loki).

He can now trade between these to perform either defensive or offensive skills and chain combos. The gameplay also allows him to upgrade his skills and gear. On the other hand, the main weapon of the secondary protagonist Atreus is his magical bow.

God of War Ragnarök   – 2022 (Main Series/console) 

It is the latest entry in the series which debuted in November 2022 for The PS5 and PS4. It is the first cross-gen title of the game.

The game continues the story and the previous mechanics of 2018. But, in this part, the main protagonist, Kratos, has more weapons, such as a magical spear, double-chained blades and various shields. So the players can experience more dynamic and versatile combat.

Also, the story has several parts, where players need to control the secondary protagonist Atreus. He fights with his main weapon, which is his bow, and also uses his fast dodges and agile skills to defeat enemies.

In the storyline, players can explore the nine realms of Norse mythology. You will also have the chance to fight an epic battle against the god of thunder, Thor. He competes against the Spartan warrior as well.
