Google Duo might be killed in the favor of Google Meet

Google has a history of running two similar services at the same time. It is also has a track record of shutting down popular services. The recent news suggests that Google is killing Google Duo in favor of Google Meet.

Google Duo launch in 2016 as a video chat app that Google’s reply to Apple’s FaceTime. On the other hand, Google Meet launched in 2017, which is designed for corporate consumers. The Meet is Google’s answers to the popular video conferencing services Zoom.

According to Google’s new head of communication services, Javier Soltero, there is no motive to run both services parallel. So they are working on a plan to shut down Google Duo and go for the Google Meet for all.

Due to the lockdown imposed to curb the spread of the global Pandemic, video conferencing services such as Zoom saw a sudden rise in users. In the time of Pandemic, users also use Zoom for their consumer needs.

Means users don’t have any problem using Zoom to chat and communicate with friends and family and use it for a business purpose. Google also thinks that Meet can also serve the purpose of the Google Duo.

If you are using Duo for video chat purposes, then you don’t need to worry now. It will take Google two years to shut down Google Duo completely. Before that, Duo will work completely fine and will receive regular updates as well.

Google also stated 9to5google regarding this news.

According to Google:

“We’re fully invested in Duo, which has seen astonishing growth during the pandemic. People around the world are relying on video calling more than ever, and we have no plans to interrupt that. We’ll continue to invest in building new Duo features and delivering a delightful experience for our users, customers, and partners. We brought the Duo organization under Javier Soltero’s leadership in May, and it follows that we’re looking at ways that our video calling products can improve alongside one another”.

In the statement, there is neither a denial nor a confirmation. But those who know Google’s history will have to understand that this would happen shortly.

In the past, Google has two email services, “Inbox” and “Gmail,” later on Inbox is shut down to give support to Gmail. Recently Google announced that “Google Play Music” will be shut down. Instead of that, “YouTube Music” will be the only Google service that users can use for music consumption.
