How to change settings on AirPods

You can get the most out of your AirPods by customizing them. However, if you are wondering how to customize your AirPods or how to change the settings on your AirPods, this article is for you as here we have mentioned how you can do that.

Note– Before you start applying any of the methods mentioned below, make sure to connect your iPhone with your AirPods.

How to Change Settings on Airpods?

Here we have mentioned different ways of customizing your AirPods. Let’s go through them one after one.

Renaming Your AirPods

You are allowed to change the name of your AirPods. Here we have mentioned how you can do that.

On iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  • First, open the charging case with your AirPods placed inside
  • Now, go to your iOS device and navigate to the settings option
  • Select Bluetooth and locate Airpods
  • Now, tap on the more info button
  • Here, tap on the current name of your AirPods and type a new name
  • Now, tap done, and you are good to go

On Mac

  • First, go to the Apple menu
  • Here, click on the system preferences and then select Bluetooth
  • Next, control-click on the AirPods
  • Select the rename option and type a new name

Change the Double-tap Action

You can change the double-tap action according to your preferences. Remember that this customization is available for AirPods 1st and 2nd generation. Follow the steps below for that:-

On iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  • First, flick open the AirPods case
  • Now, go to the settings option on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch
  • Tap on the Bluetooth option and then on the AirPods
  • Tap on the more info button and select either of the left or right AirPods to choose double tap for any of the following options
  1. Talking to Siri
  2. Playing/pausing audio content or,
  3. Skipping between tracks

On Mac

  • First, go to system preferences, then to the Bluetooth option
  • Right next to your AirPods, select options
  • Now, click on the double-tap option to select one of the options from the list mentioned above.

Readjust the Noise Control Modes

This customization option is available for the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. AirPods Pro comes with three noise control modes: Cancellation, Transparency Mode and Off. Remember that the press-and-hold action on the stem of both your AirPods changes between active noise cancellation and transparency mode by default. But you are allowed to reconfigure it.

On iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  • Go to your iOS device’s settings option and select Bluetooth
  • Next, head to your AirPods and select the more info button
  • Now, go to the press-and-hold AirPods option
  • Here, you can select either left or right
  • Select the noise control option and choose the noise control modes for the press-and-hold action.

On Mac

  • First, open the Apple menu and click on the system preferences option, followed by going to Bluetooth
  • Now, go to your AirPods and select Options
  • Here, select the Press-and-hold option and change it
  • Remember that if you select both of the AirPods, the customizations will be applied to both of them.
  • You can also set one of them to talk to Siri as well

Set One AirPod as the Microphone

In the default settings, the microphone is set automatically, which means whenever you get a phone call, both the AirPods can work as microphones. You can customize it as per your preferences.

On iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  • Go to the settings option on your iOS device, followed by going to Bluetooth.
  • Navigate to your AirPods and tap the circled “i” button situated next to it
  • Now, tap on the microphone and select the always left AirPod or always right AirPod option.

On Mac

  • Launch the Apple menu and click on the system preferences option, followed by going to the Bluetooth option.
  • Right next to your AirPods, click on options, then choose a microphone and change the settings.

Enable/Disable Automatic Ear Detection

AirPods are smart and can understand when they are in your ears and work accordingly. For example, if they are out of your ear, they will pause the audio on their own. Though this automatic ear detection feature is amazing, you can turn it off or on according to your preferences. Here is how you can do that:-

On iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  • Go to your iOS device, open settings and select the Bluetooth option.
  • Locate the AirPods and tap on the circled “i” icon beside the AirPods
  • Turn off or on the toggle button next to the automatic ear detection option

On Mac

  • Open the Apple menu and click on system preferences, followed by going to the Bluetooth option
  • Next to your AirPods, click on options and select automatic ear detection
  • Now, turn the toggle off or on according to your preferences

Manage the Digital Crown

There is a digital crown on the Airpods which is similar to the Apple Watch. This is used to adjust the volume of the device. You can change the direction to turn the digital crown according to your preferences on AirPods Max.

Remember, according to the default setting, you can turn the volume up by turning this clockwise and turn the volume down by turning this anti-clockwise. Follow the steps mentioned below to change that:-

On iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  • Open the settings of your iOS device, followed by going to the Bluetooth option
  • Tap the circled “i” next to the AirPods Max and select the digital crown option
  • Under the ‘increase volume by rotating’ option, select either Back To Front(clockwise) or Front to Back (counterclockwise).

On Mac

  • Go to the Apple menu option, followed by the system preferences option.
  • Go to Bluetooth and click on options next to your AirPods.
  • Now click on the digital crown and choose one option from increase volume by rotating.

 Prevent Automatic Connection of AirPods

If you don’t want your AirPods to get connected automatically, you can change the default settings. Here are the steps for doing that:-

On iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  • Go to the settings option of your iOS device and select Bluetooth
  • Now, tap on the circled “i” icon, right next to the AirPods
  • Choose the connect to This iPhone/iPad/iPod touch option
  • Select ‘when last connected to this phone’ option

On Mac

  • First, open the Apple menu and go to the system preferences option followed by going to the Bluetooth option.
  • Next to your AirPods, choose options.
  • Select connect to this Mac option.
  • From the drop-down menu, select the ‘when last connected to this Mac’ option.
