Mute participants in Google meet

The pandemic has shut all of us into our rooms. Work and studies are being done virtually. Online meetings and virtual classes have become a part of our daily life. There are various platforms for online meetings and virtual classes. Google has its own virtual platform called Google Hangouts, which enables users to chat, video calls, and voice calls from any part of the globe. It was initially released in 2013. Later on, Google rebranded as Google meet in 2020. Given the circumstances, Google meet has become one of the best virtual meet-up places.

Like any real-life meeting or class, there are many issues with conducting virtual meetings or classes. Especially in online classes, where not all teachers are aware of how to use the Google meet app. It can be a real problem if your students don’t want to listen to you and you don’t know how to mute them.

Many of its users who have previously used hangouts are aware of its interface and its features. Google meet gained huge popularity and millions of new users due to the current pandemic situation. The most common question people ask while conducting virtual classes or meetings is how do they mute other participants’ microphones? Also, how do they turn off other’s mic through mobile phones?

Google meet or Google hangouts is available on both PC and mobile phones. However, the interfaces of both of these two platforms are different. It can be very confusing sometimes while using some Google meet PC version features on mobile phones. But no need to worry, we’ve got you covered in both. This article will talk about how to mute participants in Google meet, both on PC and mobile phones. So,   keep reading.

How to mute participants in Google meet:

Method 1: On Windows PC

First, you need to open your Google meet on your PC. You can open via downloading the software package or can open Google meet directly from the web browser.

After that, create a meeting, and when other participants join, you will see a people icon appearing at the top right corner of the screen.

Go ahead and click on the people icon. And then, a menu list will open that will display a list of every participant in the meeting.

Now, click on the name of the person to whom you want to mute or unmute.

You will see three options just below the participant’s name.

There will be a Microphone Sign. After clicking on it, a pop-up confirmation will show. Then click ok to mute that participant’s mike.

They will be muted. However, they can unmute their mike by themselves after a couple of times.

Method 2: On mobile phones

The steps are the same as on the PC. However, we will clearly list key steps involved when muting others in Google Hangouts through mobile phones.

First, open your Google meet app from your mobile phone.

After that, when you are in a meeting, you will see the same people icon appearing at the top right corner of your mobile screen.

Tap on the people icon. And you will see the participants list.

Tap on the person to whom you want to mute or unmute.

Then you will see three icons, and one of them will have a Microphone Sign.

Tap on that option and confirm your task by tapping on the ‘OK’ button. And that participants won’t be able to speak in the meeting.

These are all the steps to mute someone on the  Google meet from PC or Mobile phones. However, before you go and mute someone in Google hangouts, there is something you need to know. For various privacy issues, Google meet has changed some of its features options. Not everyone can mute other participants. Only the host of the meeting or the co-host is allowed to do so. They can mute or unmute all participants at the same time. So if you are not the host of the meeting, you cannot mute others.
