how to turn off the AMBER alerts on S10

AMBER stands for ‘America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response Plan’. It was started in 1996 by the US Department of Justice to honour Amber Hagerman, a 9 year old girl who was kidnapped and murdered. Law enforcers and relevant agencies send alerts to the citizens about child abductions by sending AMBER alerts. Although these alerts are informative some may find them unruly as they may alert you at odd times. If you wish to learn how to turn off the AMBER alerts on S10 or any other Android phone then you can follow the instructions below.

AMBER alerts for older android phones are set in the Messaging app.

Go to Messaging for Home Screen

Tap on Messaging Menu (top-right corner) and select Settings

Next select More and then Advanced

In the list of options, you will find Emergency Alerts where you will find 5 alerts listed – Uncheck the box of AMBER alerts.

Under the Emergency Alerts, there are total 5 alerts, one of which we just discussed about is AMBER alerts. There are 4 other alerts that can also be disabled in the same way if you don’t want to be bothered with the alerts. The other alerts are:

  • Extreme Alerts are meant to warn about extreme threats to life and property
  • Severe Alerts are also meant to warn the users about threat to life and property.
  • Public Safety Alerts
  • State/Local Test Alerts

Along with these alerts, there is a Presidential alert which cannot be disabled. The Presidential alerts can only be sent by the President of the United States when there is a national emergency.

For most Android phones the above-mentioned instructions will work. However, if the phone settings of your Android are otherwise then you must look for them under Settings, you will definitely find them under alerts.
