This article will give you a step by step guide on unlocking the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 bootloader as well as all of the other devices in the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 series. The process is applicable to all the devices in the series i.e. Redmi Note 12, Redmi Note 12 Pro, Redmi Note 12 Pro Plus and the Note 12 discovery edition.
Unlocking the bootloader allows you to manually flash the firmware from the computer. This can be incredibly useful in times when the phone ends up in a boot loop or if we end up installing something that isn’t compatible with the device. It is also a great way to return the Xiaomi Redmi note 12 back to it’s original MIUI firmware.
To complete the tutorial, we are going to do two things, enabling developer mode and booting into Fastboot mode. We also need to download a tool called “Mi Unlock Tool”, a sim with a data connection and we also need to have a Xiaomi Mi account.
Let’s start with a step-by-step tutorial.
How to unlock Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 bootloader?
Go to the about phone page in the settings application to enable developer options.
Tap on the MIUI version about 7 to 10 times.
After that go back to the main settings page, navigate to additional settings and in the additional settings page scroll down to find the developer options menu. This is a hidden menu from where we can enable OEM unlocking.
In the developers’ option, look for OEM unlocking and turn on the toggle next to it.
Now, go back to the main settings page, look for the “Mi account” option and then sign in to your Xiaomi Mi account.
With all of that do you need to make sure that you have a sim card installed with data connection as we have to disable the Wi-Fi.
Go back into the developer options menu again and this time we are going to look for the “Mi Unlock Status” option.
Tap on that “Mi Unlock Status” option and we are going to likely get the permission required pop-up which we have to agree with in order to continue.
This is why we need to have a Xiaomi Mi account installed. Read the instructions below and read the step-by-step messages here:-
Tap on the “Add Account and device” button at the bottom.
Once we tap that it is going to prepare and if everything goes smoothly you should get a message saying that “it has been added”.
When you add your account make sure that both sync, as well as making sure that the device is enabled because Xiaomi needs those to verify that everything is set.
If you get an error message when you tap on “Add account and device”, remove your Mi Account that you added in the previous step and add the account again to continue the process.
Once that’s done, we can then proceed with the bootloader unlock process which starts by powering off the phone because we need to boot this device into Fastboot mode.
This is important so that our Xiaomi Mi unlock tool can recognize it.
Once the device is powered off, we need to press the power and volume button at the same time to boot into the Fastboot mode. If you are not familiar with how to do that click on the link to learn more.
Now we just need to connect our smartphone to the PC or a laptop with a USB cable.
Download the Mi Unlock tool on your PC and install it.
After the installation, open the Mi unlock tool on your PC and when you open it up, you will get a big disclaimer.
Click on the “Agree” button at the bottom to continue.
It’s going to ask you to log into your Xiaomi Mi account. It needs to be the same Xiaomi account that you used to log in on your phone.
Now once you log into your account it’s going to take you over to the secondary screen.
If you have not connected your phone to the PC, you are going to be instructed to not only plug the phone in but also to boot into Fastboot mode. It is the same thing that we do in the earlier steps.
We will also get a warning message saying that unlocking the bootloader is going to erase user data. Yes, that is correct, so back up all of your important data before unlocking the bootloader.
When you are ready just click the unlock button at the bottom of the Mi Unlock tool.
It will bring up a confirmation dialog twice to make sure this is actually what you want to do.
So, just click unlock anyway button. We will not be going to unlock the bootloader here.
It is going to be the first step in unlocking the bootloader process.
We usually have to wait either three or seven days depending on your Xiaomi account and how many smartphones you have unlocked in the past.
So, once you are ready just click unlock anyway button again. You will get a count-up percentage right here, you should get a checkmark on the verifying device option.
If everything went smoothly, you should get an unlock message and then the amount of that the device’s bootloader will be unlocked in.
The goal here is to make sure that you get a message telling you that you are allowed to unlock the phone after a certain number of hours so in our situation it is 121 hours.
Also do not add the Xiaomi Mi account to MIUI again, if you do this again within this amount of time before you unlock the bootloader it will reset the number of the hour timer.
So just don’t mess with your Mi account within MIUI from now until this timer runs out.
If you are like me and you have to wait a certain amount of time before you can unlock the bootloader, you are now safe to unplug the cable.
You can force a reboot on the phone by pressing and holding the power button. It takes about 10 to 15 seconds, but after you hold the power button down for long enough, it will turn the screen black.
Then it is going to go through the typical boot process.
Now, if you had unlocked the bootloader, it would have rebooted on it’s own.
That’s it. This is the official method of unlocking the bootloader of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 series.
