Apple announced the iPhone 12 on 13th October and it is the most awaited phone of the year. The event was held online due to COVID-19 and it was the most-streamed event.

Those who watched the event online know that Apple brings many new features to its latest and greatest iPhone.

In the event, Apple mainly boasts about the new 5G technology and the camera. Apple brings 5G in all of its iPhone 12 lineups and it is the fastest 5G technology.

Apart from the great cameras and 5G, there are many other things users should know before buying the device.

In this article, we will be discussing the 12 iPhone 12 that you should know before buying it.

5G:

This year Apple brought four devices in its iPhone 12 lineup and all four are 5G supported. The 5G on iPhone 12 brings the fastest 5G speed, very low latency and secure networks to cover all your privacy needs.

Hans Vestberg CEO of Verizon also appeared in the event where he announced that Apple and Verizon are collaborating to optimize 5G.

Apple 5G test shows that up to 4Gbps download speed can be achieved. While up to 200 Mbps upload speed can be achieved in best conditions.

On the other hand, in normal conditions, only 1 Gbps download speed can be achieved which is still the best for any device so far.

Display:

Apple is also catching up with Samsung in terms of display. Samsung has the best display in the industry and Apple is giving Samsung a tough competition.

All four iPhone 12 devices come with a Super Retina XDR display. The display is a custom Apple OLED panel mainly developed by BOE and Samsung.

The display is protected by the Corning gorilla glass which Apple developed in partnership with Corning. Glass protection of the display is named as “Ceramic Shield” and there are nano-ceramic crystals implanted in the display. The nano-ceramic crystals make the display more durable.

iPhone 12 lineup display comes with a resolution of 2532*1170 with 460 PPI. The maximum brightness can be reached up to 1200 nits.

When it comes to the sizes, iPhone 12 mini display is 5.4-inches, 12 and 12 Pro comes with 6.1-inches while Pro Max comes with 6.7-inches.

Design:

Apple brings significant improvements in the design when compared to the previous generation. The tech giant claims that this year iPhones are 11% thinner, 15% smaller and 16% lighter than the previous generation.

Side bezels are also reduced which help in getting bigger displays and more hardware. All four devices in the lineup are IP68 dust and water-resistant certified.

A14 Bionic Chip:

A14 Bionic chip is the world’s first silicon-based on 5nm fabrication. The A14 Bionic chip is the world’s fastest SoC to come within a smartphone. There are 11.8 billion transistors embedded in the chip which is 38% more than the previous generation.

Apple also claims that A14 bionic chips are 50% faster than the A13 used last year in the iPhone 11 series.

The CPU is built on 6 cores while the CPU has 4 cores and the neural engine comes with 16 cores. With 16 cores, the neural engine performs 80% faster than the A13 which has 8 cores. The A14 Bionic chip is capable of doing 11 trillion operations within a second.

Cameras:

The iPhone is among the devices which have the best cameras. The standard and mini model consist of dual cameras. The main camera in the setup is 12-MP with f/1.6 aperture. This camera has a wide focal length of 26 nm. The other camera in the setup is the 12-MP ultra-wide camera with f/2.4 aperture. The ultra-wide camera lens has a 13 nm focal length.

They can take excellent low light photos as more light can travel through the lenses.

On the higher end Pro and Pro Max model there is a triple camera setup. The main and ultra-wide lenses are similar to the standard model. There is an additional 12-MP with f/2.2 aperture telephoto lens.

Other camera features include the optical image stabilization for better shots of moving objects and a 2.5x optical zoom.

Videography:

The main camera in the iPhone 12 lineup can record videos up to 4k at 60 FPS. The higher-end Pro and Pro Max can record HDR videos. There is a Dolby vision HDR support through which users can edit Dolby vision videos.

LiDAR Scanner:

Apple introduces the LiDAR scanner in its smartphones this year. LiDAR scanner is used to spot objects in the pictures and the background. It will help users to autofocus in images 6 times faster even in low light.

Colour:

The mini and standard model will be available in five colour options. These colours are Black, White, Green, Blue and Product Red.

The Pro and Pro Max model are available in four colour options. These colours are Silver, graphite, Gold and pacific Blue.

Battery:

Apple didn’t disclose the exact battery specification in the live event but the mini and standard model have probably 2800 mAh batteries. The Pro and Pro Max have 3700 mAh batteries. All devices support 15W fast charging and for the first time, there is no charger included in the box.

The Cupertino based tech giant introduces a MagSafe feature via magnet coil in the back. With this users can connect accessories on the rear side via magnet.

As this feature is introduced there will be many new accessories available soon that are supported by this. As of now, users can connect Magsafe Wallets, chargers and different covers.

Pricing and Availability:

The tech giant has introduced the lineup with decent prices similar to the last year.

Following are the starting prices of each variant. If you increase the storage the price will also increase.

  • The mini model is priced at $699 and is available from 13th November.
  • The standard model is priced at $799 and is available from 23rd October.
  • Pro model is priced at $999 similar to last year’s pro model and is available from 23rd October.
  • Pro Max model is priced at $1099 similar to last year Pro Max and is available from 13th November.

Accessories:

Surprising Apple confirms all the previous rumours and for the first time, there are no accessories included in the box. Users have to buy a charger, cable and even EarPods separately. Luckily if you are from France then you will get the EarPods in the box due to their local law.

Storage:

There are multiple storage options available for each model. iPhone 12 mini and 12 will come with 64GB, 128GB and 256GB storage options. The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max will come with 128GB, 256GB and 512GB storage options.
