How to Boot the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro into Recovery Mode

Android has several special boot modes with a popular one being called Recovery Mode. It has been given that name because most people use it to recover their smartphone from some sort of issue (such as a bootloop). If you run into this case then follow these steps to boot the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro into Recovery Mode.

I will be covering all of the ways to boot the new OnePlus smartphone into the various number of Android boot modes. Today’s tutorial will be focusing on how to boot this device both into and out of Recovery Mode. This is quite useful to know how to do because you may end up needing this in the future.

Software is made by humans and we make mistakes a lot. Whether this is an OTA update breaking something or our current setup just going haywire for seemingly no reason. This issue is blown up when you consider many OnePlus owners like to tinker with their phone so that can cause similar issues.

In any case, knowing how to boot into Recovery Mode for emergencies is a great backup plan to have.

The software you see at the OnePlus 7 Recovery Mode main menu is quite similar to Android’s stock recovery image. OnePlus added touch functionality, removed some unpopular features, and made their version straight forward. I’ll be covering the various things we can do in Recovery Mode in future tutorials.

First, you need to know how to get into this special boot mode so let me show you how that is done.

Time needed: 3 minutes

How to Boot the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro into Recovery Mode

  1. Power off the smartphone

  2. You can begin to hold the Power and Volume Down buttons once the OnePlus 7 has completely shut down

  3. Continue holding these two buttons

You’ll feel the smartphone vibrate once it is turned back on. Don’t let go of these two buttons when you feel it, continue holding them down.

  4. A few seconds after the OnePlus logo splash screen, you will be booted into the OnePlus 7 Recovery Mode

  5. You can let go of these two buttons the moment you are booted into Recovery Mode

As this is one of the first tutorials for the new OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro, I wanted to keep things simple and not go into too much detail here. I told you before that there are some tasks we can perform while our device is in Recovery Mode. I will be going over those in future tutorials though.

This tutorial is strictly for teaching you how to boot the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro into and out of Recovery Mode.

As you can see, there are a couple of ways we can go about this and it is rather easy as well. In fact, it’s so easy that it can even happen by accident. I only covered one method of booting the OnePlus smartphone into Recovery Mode but there are other ways it can be done as well.

How Else Can We Boot the OnePlus 7 into Recovery Mode?

The secondary method I want to mention here is technically the same as what I mentioned in the step by step tutorial above. The difference here is that we are going about it a different way. So in the tutorial above, I tell you to shut off the OnePlus 7 or OnePlus 7 Pro and then hold two buttons during the boot cycle.

One of those buttons is the Power button and it’s technically only used to turn the smartphone back on. So, if you wanted to, you could do this with just one button. This can be done from within Android by bringing up the Power Menu and making the device restart.

If your smartphone is currently in a bootloop then it’s doing that first step (making the phone reboot) for you).

As soon as the OnePlus 7 or OnePlus 7 Pro starts to reboot, you can then press and hold the Volume Down button. We’re able to bypass holding the Power button down here because the smartphone is already in the process of booting back up. So just keep holding the Volume Down button and it will boot you into Recovery Mode.

There are two more ways that we can boot the device into Recovery Mode.

If you wanted to, you could issue the command ADB reboot bootloader from a Terminal or Command Prompt (as long as you have ADB Debugging Mode enabled). You can even go into the Developer Options menu (after Developer Mode has been enabled) and toggle the Advanced Reboot option on.

With this on, you get two more options added to your Power Menu (and one is for the OnePlus 7 Recovery Mode).
