The end of an era for the Oxygen OS as OnePlus confirms that its future flagship will release with a combination of OxygenOS and Color OS.
A few months back, OnePlus and its sister company Oppo merged their product and R&D department. Later on, they announced the integration of Codebase of OxygenOS ColorOS.
However, there is still confusion in the mind of customers related to this merger. Today the company has shed some light on its future plans and its integration with Oppo. The main point of the new announcement is the new unified OS which will carry the DNA of both OxygenOS and Color OS.
The OnePlus CEO and Oppo’s Chief Product office Pete Lau has confirmed the merger of both OxygenOS and Color OS and the starting of a new “OnePlus 2.0”. For products and services the CEO confirms that they will make products that resonate with its existing tagline “Never Settle”.
He said that the company will keep offering high-quality smartphones at different price segments. Users will also be able to unlock the bootloader of the future devices just like normal.
In a recent development, the designed team of both companies are also merged to form a single team. So that the new team will design the products for both the companies. But both companies will have an independent PR, Marketing, and branding team.
The main highlight of the recent announcement is the integration of OxygenOS and Color OS into a new Unified OS. It is more than merging the codebase of both the custom skins.
The company said that the new unified OS will have the best of both worlds i.e the stability and feature-rich experience of Color OS and the fast, simple, and close to the stock android experience of OxygenOS. The CEO didn’t disclose the name of its new custom OS.
Pete Lau has assured the loyal fans of OnePlus that in the new OS they “will keep the DNA of OxygenOS that many of you love so much.”
He also said that:
“We will customize the unified OS specifically for OnePlus devices to make sure it meets your expectations, for example by keeping it as clean and lightweight as before and continuing to support unlock bootloaders.”
Even though both the phones have the same codebase in the OS, the interface remains different in both the phones. We have to wait until 2022 to see what both companies will bring in terms of the user interface to their phones and how both company’s phones will differ from each other. OnePlus also states that they will not push ads on their devices just like some other rival brands do.
It is expected that this new unified OS will release next year with the launch of the OnePlus 10 and it will also be the first phone from the company to come with the new OS. Later that year both the companies will push the new unified OS update to more of their devices, especially from previous years. However, there is no exact timeline from both the companies of when it will be available to smartphones and how many devices will get the latest update.
For this year, both the companies will push their own OS update i.e Oppo phones will receive the Color OS update while OnePlus devices will get the OxygenOS 12 update based on Android 12 in the coming weeks.
