Snapdragon 678

Qualcomm has brought a successor to the SD 675 dubbed as Snapdragon 678. The Qualcomm 600 series was very popular in mid-range devices back in 2018. But then the chipmaker announces the 700 series which caters to mid-range devices.

These days there is only a Snapdragon 662 chipset available in the 600 series for budget and entry-level devices. Snapdragon 662 is a decent chipset for all the budget devices which handles day to day tasks easily. It is not meant for the power users as it could not handle heavy tasks especially graphics-intensive games.

Out of a sudden, the chipmaker brings Snapdragon 678 for the mid-range devices. It offers much better performance and will be used in mid-range devices.

Its successor was launched back in 2018 and was used in a few devices back then. Redmi Note 7 Pro, Samsung Galaxy A70s, Vivo U20 were the devices that used Snapdragon 675. Snapdragon 678 is a successor to the 675 and brings enhancements in photography departments. But it does not bring any significant enhancement in battery backup.

It is an octa-core chipset built on the 11nm fabrication. Qualcomm claims that it provides just the incremental upgrade over SD 675. The Kyro 460 CPU in SD 678 is clocked at 2.2 GHz while in SD 675 it was clocked at 2.0 GHz base frequency. Adreno 612 GPU is used in both of these chipsets for graphics tasks. According to the company, there is an improvement in performance in this chipset. The company refers to Kyro 460 Cortex-A76 and Cortex-A55 cores.

Snapdragon 678 Details:

The chipset will support the display resolution of FHD+ and a 10-bit color depth. The camera comes with a 14-bit Qualcomm Spectra 250L ISP. Meaning it can support a single camera of up to 192 megapixels. While the single/double camera of up to 25/16 megapixels. It will also come with all the Qualcomm AI features like portrait mode, low light, focus mode, and 4K video recording.

The GPU inside the SD678 is optimized to support Unity, Messiah, NeoX, and Unreal Engine 4. It can easily handle the games on average to low settings easily.

It doesn’t bring 5G connectivity with itself. It is a 4G chipset that comes with a Qualcomm X12 LTE modem which supports all global bands. It can achieve a maximum download speed of 600 Mbps and an upload speed of 150 Mbps.
