Russia Penalized Google For $358 Million Citing Content Violations

Citing non-compliance with local regulations, Russia’s internet watchdog has fined Google a whopping $358 million this week.

The Russian regulator, Roskomnadzor, said Google repeatedly failed to remove the banned content from it’s Search and YouTube, thus penalizing it 10% of it’s annual turnover in the country. Google has been fined by Russia for similar reasons many times in the past.

Fining Google For Repeated Violations

Since the beginning of Russia’s war against Ukraine, many companies have stood against Russia’s stance and withdrew their services. Google is one of them; that limited most of it’s services to Russians and even received penalties for various violations.

The recent one comes from Roskomnadzor, Russia’s internet watchdog, which fined Google 21 billion rubles ($358 million) for not removing the following objected content from it’s search and YouTube;

  • Information about the course of the “special military operation” in Ukraine, which discredits the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
  • Content promoting extremism and terrorism.
  • Content promoting harmful acts for the life and health of minors.
  • Information that promotes participation in unauthorized mass actions.

Google was already fined last year and many other times for similar reasons this year. Since it’s repeating the same violation, Roskomnadzor decided on the new penalty per Russia’s Code of Administrative, which affixes 10% of the violator’s annual turnover in the country.

That said, it amounted to $358 million for Google. Though Google already filed for bankruptcy in Russia, citing repeated fines and asset confiscation, some non-paid services remain accessible with some restrictions.

Aside from this penalty, Roskomnadzor also ordered the company to fix a warning banner in Search and YouTube, regrading it’s violation of law, and bar Russians from buying ad spaces in the above services.
