The app first announced the video call option in 2020 but couldn’t offer it to its users. In August 2020, the app offers one-to-one video encrypted video calls to its users.
Now, the founder and CEO of Telegram Pavel Durov announced today on its official Telegram channel that Group video calling will be available for users in May 2021. Along with the group video calling the app will also offer some other new features.
According to Pavel Durov,
“Screen sharing, encryption, noise-canceling, desktop and tablet support — everything you can expect from a modern video conferencing tool, but with Telegram-level UI, speed and encryption”.
Telegram is among the first instant messaging app that offers end-to-end encryption on messages. It also offers end-to-end encryption for one-to-one video calls. But with the introduction of group video calls, these video calls are also encrypted.
The good thing is that most of these new features will also be available for web apps and the desktop app as well.
Telegram is now offering more and more features to its users at a faster pace as the number of daily users is increasing rapidly. In April 2020, the company shared that it reached 400 million active monthly users. This year it reached 500 million active monthly users and the number of users is increasing.
The group video call will help the app to compete with the likes of Zoom. The global pandemic has changed the way we work and now work from home has become a new norm.
Zoom benefited the most from the pandemic and many companies tried to compete with it by offering their own version of the group calling including WhatsApp.
