To check the integrity of their native companies, the UK’s NCSC is preparing to scan all the internet-connected devices of their organizations and find out how secure they are.
The department will log all the device responses and match them with any noted vulnerabilities. Companies are advised to reach out to the NCSC if they want any of their specific domains to be excluded from this mass scanning.
Mass Scanning for Good
With growing cyberattacks, the UK government is taking the drastic step of scanning all the internet-connected devices belonging to their local organizations and noting how well they are ready for potential cyberattacks.
This program is run by the UK’s GCHQ-led National Cyber Security Centre, which informed the public of mass scanning soon with certain domains and IP addresses. Organizations may soon see IP addresses 18.171.7.246; 35.177.10.231 and the domain scanner.scanning.service.ncsc.gov.uk requesting access and general data logging.
All the connections made will log certain responses like the date, time, and IP addresses of the devices and match them against a set of noted vulnerabilities in wild. If found, the agency may notify the concerned organization to patch the bugs.
The actual purpose of this mass scanning is to know how well their local organizations are prepared against a potential threat. So the agency will make a report at the CYBERUK conference, scheduled in April next year.
Affirming that the complexity of these scans will increase over time, the agency noted that their scanning requests would come with an identifying header for easy noting. Further, it asked the organizations to reach out to them via scanning@ncsc.gov.uk to exclude any IP addresses from their scans.
