WhatsApp to introduce screen sharing feature for video calls soon

WhatsApp

WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging app owned by Meta, is set to introduce an exciting new feature for it’s video call service. The app has been working on a range of new features, which will be available in the coming months.

One of these new features is screen sharing during video calls, a functionality already present on other conferencing apps like Zoom, Skype, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. Users can tap on the screen-sharing button in the menu while on a video call and share their screen with other participants. Currently, the feature is in the testing phase and is available to select beta testers. However, it will roll out globally to all users in the coming days.

This screen-sharing feature was spotted by WhatsApp update tracker WABetaInfo on the Beta version 2.23.11.19 for Android. In the beta version on Android, users can see the screen-sharing icon during a video call. The icon consists of a simple vertical screen with an arrow moving toward the right in the middle.

When users tap the screen sharing icon, a popup window appears asking for their consent to record and cast the video call. The app’s update tracker shared a screenshot of this popup window, including a warning about the potential risks of screen sharing. By tapping on the start now button on the popup window that appears on the screen, you can show your screen’s content to other participants.

This feature can be particularly useful when users want to share tutorials or showcase content to friends or relatives. Once finished, users can tap on the red stop button to end the screen sharing. It’s worth noting that, like other WhatsApp communication features, screen sharing is end-to-end encrypted, ensuring the security and privacy of the shared data.
