Xiaomi has confirmed that its upcoming Xiaomi 18 Fold will become the world’s first smartphone to feature CXMT’s new LPDDR6 memory technology. The foldable is scheduled to launch in early September alongside Xiaomi’s new SkyNomad SUV.
Xiaomi founder, chairman and CEO Lei Jun announced the development on Weibo while congratulating Chinese memory manufacturer CXMT on achieving mass production of LPDDR6. Lei described the achievement as “remarkable” and highlighted the growing collaboration between Chinese technology companies.
The new XRING O3 chipset will play a key role in the Xiaomi 18 Fold’s memory system. Xiaomi says the XRING O3 is the first smartphone processor designed to support the LPDDR6 standard. The chipset was unveiled on August 24, making it one of the newest additions to Xiaomi’s in-house silicon lineup.
According to details reported by IT Home from CXMT’s 2026 semi-annual report, LPDDR6 brings significant improvements over the company’s previous LPDDR5X memory. The new standard features an upgraded architecture and improved data-transfer system, enabling transfer speeds of up to 12,800Mbps. CXMT also offers LPDDR6 chips with capacities of up to 16GB per chip.
Faster memory can improve overall smartphone performance, particularly when handling multiple applications, demanding games and AI-powered features. It can also contribute to faster app launches and smoother multitasking.
For CXMT, supplying memory for the first LPDDR6 smartphone represents an important achievement as the company seeks to compete with established memory manufacturers such as Samsung and SK Hynix.
