Review

ROG STRIX is one of the top brands in the PC Gaming sector and there is no denying the fact that the products made by ROG STRIX are top-class. However, some might joke about ‘ROG TAX’ but make no mistake about its quality and performance. ROG STRIX boards are full of high specs and pleasing on the eyes, some game lovers might even use words such as flashy, sleek, and shiny while explaining its features.

The Z590 chipset can support both 10th Gen and 11th Gen Intel Core processors. However, it is advisable to use it with an 11th Gen processor for a better experience. When compared with Z490, the Z590 chipset has more connectivity options and power delivery. But, the real difference is in terms of PCI-E 4.0 support which works with the Z590 chipset.

As for the look, it looks similar to the recently launched ROG Zephyrus series. However, the ROG Strix Z590-E Gaming Wifi looks more premium due to its less aggressive cyberpunk dystopian shape. As for the design,  the company decided to clearly separate the M.2 heatsink and the Z590 chipset heatsink so that you don’t have to go through the problem of removing the chipset heatsink in order to have to go at an M.2 SSD slot.

ASUS ROG Strix series uses teamed power architecture for ROG motherboards and this latest ASUS ROG Strix Z590-E is no different. However, this time ASUS decided to use fewer fins on the Z590 VRM heatsinks due to popular demand.

The ROG Strix-E boards used to have at least two more power stages than the other ROG Strix; however, times have changed for the Z590 series, and this norm is no longer needed. Now, the ROG Strix series has a 14+2 power stage design. The ROG Strix-E differs itself this time by having 70A variants compared to the 50A variants installed on the Strix Z590 boards having 50 A instead of 70 A variants which are installed on ROG Strix-E.

For better cooling, Z590-E uses a 40MM fan together with the MOS fan. Moreover, it supports DDR4 5,333MHz(OC) and uses a daisy chain trace design so that it can get a higher peak frequency by reducing signal which would increase its compatibility and the overclocking margin.

As for connectivity options, you’ll get 3.2 Gen 1 ports and three USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports. Plus, there are 4 3.2 USB Gen 1 ports, 3 3.2 Gen 2 ports one of which is a type-c port, two USB 2.0 ports, and a single USB 3.2 Gen2x2 Type-C port. It also comes with traditional audio, HDMI, and Display ports, and a BIOS flashback button and a CMOS button an upgraded Wi-Fi module, and an additional Intel 2.5GbE ethernet port.

It uses a simple locking mechanism to secure the SSD, Q-Latch design.

PROS

Comes packed with 4 M.2 Heatsinked slots

Wide range of ports

AI-based Overclocking

Easy to navigate

CONS

No multi-GPU support

The Z590 ROG Maximus XIII Hero

Review

We’ll review another of Asus well-built motherboards: The Z590 ROG Maximus XIII Hero. It may not outdo the Z490-E but it remains one of the best in the business. This “Rocket Lake” motherboard strikes a perfect balance between price and features.

The design looks sharp but somewhat subdued. It comes with all-black heatsinks and heat spreaders alongside some lighter gray sections that add to its aesthetics. It contains diagonal cuts for better cooling and to keep the board slicker. Plus, the way the RGB LEDs are set over the chipset and between the fins on the VRM heatsinks makes it look robust.

When you look at its storage scheme, it has plenty of storage connections. You’ll have access to six SATA 3.0 ports set at a right angle which is pretty much standard these days for most mainstream ATX boards. You will also have the access to four M.2 Key-M slots for high-speed solid-state drives. You will also get your hands on mainstream networking hardware—two Intel I225-V 2.5Gbps Ethernet controllers. However, it doesn’t come with a 5Gbps controller which is a bit of a letdown.

On the other hand, for better Wi-Fi support you will get integrated wireless controllers  which are labeled as the Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 that will support the upcoming 802.11az standard. As for audio, the chipset uses Realtek’s ALC4082 codec which has support for 32-bit, 384KHz audio sampling

Its rear I/O panel contains a total of eight USB Type-A ports and two Type-C ports with the two RJ-45 internet jacks, two Wi-Fi antenna connections, an HDMI port, and the usual audio jacks an optical S/PDIF connection. There two buttons at the top of the rear I/O panel for resetting the BIOS or flashing to a newer version.

It comes loaded with one of the best BIOS as it contains simple but highly useful add-ons. When you land in the main tab of the Advanced mode BIOS menu, you won’t find anything interesting. However, you will get a lot of options in the Advanced and OC tabs that allow you to make small changes quickly without any trouble.

PROS

Attractive and edgy

Stable operation

High specs BIOS

Competitively priced

CONS

Has no 5Gbps Ethernet controller

Buying Guide For Motherboards

Motherboards are the most essential part of the computer that unites all the hardware components. However, not all motherboards are suitable for your processor. Here are things that need to consider before buying a motherboard.

RAM

Try to find a motherboard that can at least accommodate 16 GB of RAM. The hardcore gamers, professional graphic designers, and content creators require at least 16GB to work with. Also, try to go for a motherboard that has at least  4 memory slots which will help you for upgrading memory and storage.

PCI Slots

Before buying a motherboard try to find out how many PCI slots your motherboard has. You will at least need one full-speed PCI Express x16 slot on your motherboard. A PCI slot connects expansion cards to the motherboards. Hardcore gamers and professional coding experts require multiple full-speed PCI Express x16 slots to fulfill their needs.

Form Factor

This is the most important feature which you need to consider before buying a motherboard. You need to know the specifications of the motherboard that you are buying. Chances are that if you get the specifications wrong, the motherboard will not fit. Both ATX motherboards and micro ATX are common, but only one will fit well for your processor.

Processor Socket

This is also an important factor that you need to consider. There are many types of sockets but, nowadays only three are common: LGA, PGA, and BGA. The first two are used by Intel and AMD but the third one isn’t really popular as they are already connected to the motherboard and therefore, they can’t be upgraded. So, check out the specifications of your motherboard to know about the processor socket which will help you determine what processor you can buy.
