Chinese technology giant Xiaomi is preparing to expand its presence in India by entering the large home appliances segment, marking a major shift in its long-term business strategy. Recently, Xiaomi Global has started shipments of large home appliances outside of China and is expanding into key global markets, including India. The move comes at a time when smartphone shipments in India have witnessed a significant slowdown, pushing the company to explore new growth opportunities beyond mobile devices.
Xiaomi is reportedly planning to launch products such as air-conditioners, refrigerators, and washing machines in the Indian market. The company is looking to establish local manufacturing operations and is currently evaluating potential electronics manufacturing service partners that can support technology transfers and production capabilities within the country.
The expansion will be led by Alex Tang, who has been appointed as the new South Asia regional head, overseeing India along with markets including Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. The appointment follows the departure of former India country head Alvin Tse, who has moved back to Beijing. Under the new structure, India will become the headquarters for Xiaomi’s South Asia operations, with greater responsibility for regional growth.
Xiaomi’s chief business officer, Sandeep Arora, said that the company’s product teams are assessing local partners to understand their technical capabilities and ability to manufacture advanced products. The focus on local production aligns with India’s push for domestic manufacturing and could help Xiaomi strengthen its position in the competitive consumer electronics market.
The company already sells home appliances in several international markets, and its entry into India’s large appliance sector could help it compete with established players such as LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, and other consumer electronics brands.
