How 5G Internet Works And Its Benefits To You

Fix Internet Keeps Stopping On Galaxy S22

When it comes to cellular marketing, there is perhaps no buzzier buzz word than 5G. Despite the fact consumers hear it all the time, many do not know what it is or how it differs from 4G.

What Is 5G?

5G is a global wireless standard. It stands for fifth generation and succeeds the 1G, 2G, 3G and 4G mobile networks. The goal of this new standard is to facilitate a network that can connect practically everyone and everything. 5G is not fundamentally different from 4G. It builds on it, and the key differences is latency. 5G allows for latency less than 5 milliseconds whereas 4G is 60 milliseconds at best. The low latency is integral to the vision of connecting everyone. The ideal is that connecting to the internet via your phone will feel no different than connecting at home via a hard line. Speeds are faster too. 5G can be up to 100 times faster than 4G internet, which is often mentioned in advertising.

Do You Need 5G?

The answer to this question depends on where you live and how you use the internet. Let us start by noting that while the industry has made some lofty claims about 5G, it really has not delivered on them. It has in some areas but not in most. There first thing you have to do is determine whether 5G in your area will be a significant improvement for you over the 4G network you currently use. If not, then the answer, for now, is no.

If yes, then you have to consider the cost within the context of how you use your phone. If you are someone who is on your phone all the time for business and video conferences and so forth, then yes, 5G is absolutely worth it. As far as entertainment, it is also better for watching videos on YouTube and streaming movies on Netflix as 5G have faster internet speed.

Is 5G Just for Your Phone?

No. Smartphones were the first devices to have access to 5G, and the marketing often associates 5G with your phone. However, in major cities where there is a strong 5G signal, wireless providers like AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon are already marketing it to residents as an alternative to cable. It may take a while, but 5G will eventually be good enough to cut into the home internet market substantially.

Are There Disadvantages to 5G?

One downside to 5G is that most people still do not have a 5G phone or any other devices that can connect via 5G. The other main disadvantage is simply access. If you live in a city with 5G and do not travel a lot, the experience is great. But if you do travel, then you will have user experiences that vary wildly depending on where you are.

Is 5G Better Than Wi-Fi?

5G is faster than Wi-Fi in theory and in practice in some service areas. But the reality is that 5G is not better than Wi-Fi yet for most users. We can definitely imagine a future in which 5G has made Wi-Fi obsolete, but that future is a long way off for most of us.

How Do You Get 5G?

First, you need to determine if 5G is available in your area, and all of the major carriers have coverage maps you can use to figure that out. If so, then the next step is to sign up for a 5G plan with one of those companies. You will also need a 5G phone, but you may be able to take care of that during signup.
