Keyboard Typing Backwards

When you have a malfunctioning keyboard, it can be difficult to continue working on your PC or laptop. However, not all keyboard malfunctions are equally serious. In case you find your keyboard typing backward, it is most likely due to language or region conflicts or maybe some sort of minor keyboard glitches. Solving all these issues is very much straightforward and you can find all the troubleshooting techniques mentioned below in this article. Keep reading to learn more.

Reasons why my Keyboard is Typing Backwards

Here are some reasons why your keyboard is typing backward:

  • The left key is stuck on the n-Key rollover keyboards
  • Some conflicts are taking place with the right to left region and language
  • The application settings force backward typing
  • There are keyboard driver glitches
  • Typing right when an app starts operating

How can you fix a keyboard that is typing backward?

The one thing that you must try first is to restart your application. If you find a problem with the web browser you are using, it is recommended to reopen the tab first. You can opt for a restart to reset any temporary settings likely responsible for the error. You can even try to reboot the system if this issue is with your system and not your applications.

If you still continue facing this issue or cannot restart your PC or the app, make sure to go through all possible solutions mentioned below and apply them as per your scenario.

Check the Language and Region Setting

If you have set your system locality to a particular region whereby the language makes use of the right-to-left system, then you are likely to end up with this issue even when you are typing any other language that uses the left-to-right system. It used to be a very common and problematic scenario in prior versions of the Windows Operating System. However, as of now, your system is organized to be able to apply the required writing direction automatically.

But there can be some bugs with your system that can force your keyboard to type backward. You will have to change your region to resolve this error, and for doing the same, follow the instruction mentioned below:

Step 1- Press Win+I to open the settings

Step2- Visit Time & Language>Region or Language&Region

Step 3- Set the region or country of your location and the regional format recommended.

You can even remove the RTL(right to left) language completely from the system or any other applications you use to avoid conflicts with regular typing.

Check the left directional key(D pad) of your keyboard

Backward typing is a common issue for the n-key rollover keyboard in case you press and hold the left key when typing. As on other keyboards, detecting any directional keys stops when you press any other keys. However, a keyboard with n-key rollover can individually detect all the n keys you press at a given time. So, even with 2 key-rollover, your computer will continue detecting the left key you pressed, resulting in a backward typing effect.

If you end up pressing the left key once you are done typing numerous words or characters, you can instantly tell that the key is causing the issue. But if the same occurs right at the beginning of a text box or document, you likely won’t be aware. Therefore, do consider checking whether you have placed any sort of heavy object on the keyboard or whether the left direction key is stuck.

Be wary of Mouse/Keyboard Usage

You can sometimes end up with this issue after you have selected, change cursor position unknowingly or highlighted some texts using the touch-pad or mouse from the right to left direction. If you begin typing without even releasing the change, or as soon as you release it, the keyboard cursor remains at the very left.

Make Use Of the Writing Direction Shortcuts

If you make use of the Right to Left Language, such as Arabic, you can adhere to the use of a keyboard shortcut to shift between the Left to Right and Right to Left mode. These shortcuts are as follows:

On Windows:

>RTL: Ctrl+Right Shift

>LTR:Ctrl+Left Shift

On Mac:

>RTL: Command+Option+Control+Left Arrow

>LTR: Command+Option+Control+Right Arrow

Run the Keyboard Troubleshooter

Windows comes with a dedicated troubleshooter for it’s software and hardware components. If there are any prevailing issues with the keyboard, you can try to run the keyboard Troubleshooter. Here are the steps that you have to follow for doing the same from the Windows Settings app:

Open the Settings (Win+I)

Go to the System>Troubleshoot or Update & Security>Troubleshoot

Select all other Troubleshooters or any Additional Troubleshooters

Now click on the Run Next to the Keyboard or Keyboard>Run this Troubleshooter

Update and Reinstall the Keyboard Driver

A bug affecting the keyboard driver likely leads to a certain transposition error. We suggest updating the drivers to fix this error. Now to update the keyboard driver, you have to follow these rules:

Open Run and Enter devmgmt.msc

Expand “Keyboards”, followed by right-clicking on your device

Select the Update drivers option and search for drivers automatically

You can then try to reinstall the latest drivers to resolve the bugs in case you possess all the latest drives. You can even reset the keyboard settings if the keyboard is equipped with some dedicated software.

Change Writing Direction on Applications

Some apps let you easily alter the writing directions to add relevant support for RTL languages. Now changing this particular option does not make you actually type backward with any other languages, like English. However, such languages may reveal unusual behavior if one uses them along with the RTL languages.

The keyboard cursor also shows up right at the far left corner with the Right to Left direction of writing. Hence, you are likely to come across the illusion of backward typing even if that is not the actual scenario. For both these cases, you can simply change the writing direction whenever using a Left to Right language.

Here is how to do the same on some popularly used apps like Microsoft Office and Web Browsers.

On the Browsers:

Highlight the text then right-click and select the writing Direction>Left to Right.

You can even check a flag to ensure that the browsers are not forcing you to write in this direction. To do so:-

  1. Enter About:Flags into the address bar
  2. Disable the Flag Force UI Direction
  3. Hit Relaunch option

On Microsoft Office:

Visit File>Options>Quick Access Toolbar

Set Choose Commands from to All Commands

Select Right to Left and Left To Right from the List and hit the option Add.

Select OK

Now you will find the Title bar with 2 add-on icons for writing directions. Simply hover over these followed by selecting them as per your need.

You can also utilize an online reverse text generator.
