OxygenOS has a built-in gesture on the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T that lets you enable a Double Tap to Wake feature and that’s what I want to show you today.

Double Tap to Wake was a feature that LG popularized within the smartphone community a few years back. They called it Knock On, but these two features do the exact same thing. The generic name of the feature actually explains what it does pretty well. When the screen is off while your OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T is locked, you can simply double tap on the screen to wake it up.

Doing so will present you with your Lock Screen. This is very handy for when you want to quickly check your notifications on the OnePlus 3.

Instead of having to reach up or fumble around for the Power button, you can simply double tap anywhere on the screen. This is one of those features that seems silly and unnecessary at first, but it really is habit forming and can become an incredibly convenient feature. It’s one of those features that you don’t know what you’re missing until you use it for a few months.

So today I want to show you where this feature is located within the settings menu of OxygenOS, and the video below will give you a demonstration about how this feature looks/works.

OnePlus 3 Double Tap to Wake

  1. Launch the Settings application
  2. Scroll down and tap on the ‘Gestures’ option
  3. Make sure the Gestures toggle is set to ‘On’
  4. Then tap on the check box for the Double Tap to Wake feature

As you can see, accessing the feature is very easy and it’s from this settings menu that you can turn it on and off anytime you’d like. This feature does not use any of the battery because it’s possible thanks to how OnePlus designed the hardware. There are ways to get this feature to work on devices that have the proper hardware setup, but that actually does use the battery. This does not though so you don’t have to worry about battery life issues on the OnePlus 3.

To start, you’ll need to launch the Settings application and then scroll down to tap on the Gestures option. This will show you 4 different gestures that you can setup and it will have a universal toggle to enable or disable all gestures at the very top. You will be unable to access any of the gestures listed below until you turn the Gestures toggle on. Once it has been toggled on, you can enable or disable any of 4 gestures listed below it.

OnePlus 3 Double Tap to Wake Enable
This is the toggle you will have to turn on to enable Double Tap to Wake.

You can experiment with any of these gestures and again, none of them will use your battery anymore than if they were turned off. Since we’re focusing on the OnePlus 3 Double Tap to Wake feature, lets go ahead and put a check in the empty box of this feature. Once the check is in the box, you can test out this by pressing the Power button to lock the OnePlus 3. Once it is locked and the screen is black, go ahead and tap on the screen twice in a row.

You can see how I do this in the video above. Tapping too slowly will not trigger the gesture so it does have to be relatively quickly. Once you get the hang of it though, it becomes second nature. If for any reason you tried this feature out and you don’t like it, you can always come back here and remove the checkbox from the OnePlus 3 Double Tap to Wake option.
