These five Google Chrome extensions are stealing user’s data

Google Chrome

Google Chrome is the most popular web browser on every platform out there. One of the best features of Google Chrome is the support for tons of extensions. Extensions are the extra add-on that makes the browsing experience much more pleasant and efficient.

There are thousands of extensions on the Chrome web store which you can download easily and add to your Google Chrome browser to make the browsing experience efficient. There are extensions for different purposes like an ad blocker to block ads on websites, VPN extensions that let you unblock contents that are blocked by your ISPs, and much more. However, not all these extensions are trustworthy. Some of these extensions are quietly stealing your personal data and tracking your browsing pattern.

According to a report from popular cybersecurity company McAfee, there are five Google chrome extensions that are stealing user’s personal data. These five extensions are Netflix Party, Netflix Party 2, Full page screenshot capture, FlipShope – Price Tracker Extension, and AutoBuy – Flash Sales. Together these extensions have collective downloads of 1.4 million. Among these five extensions, Netflix Party is the most popular with over 800,000 downloads while Netflix Party 2 has 300,000 downloads. Netflix party as the name suggests is the extension that will allow you to watch Netflix content online with your friends or family together by syncing videos. While FlipShope allows you to track the prices of products on different eCommerce stores and with Full page screenshot capture you can take a screenshot of your web page.

McAfee report reveals that these extensions have a multipurpose script that copies users browsing data and then send that data to an attacker-controlled domain. The extensions work in the background and every time you visit a website, your data is being sent to those malicious domains. The report also states that these extensions are stealing user data such as Zip Code, user ID, nationality, device location, and much more. So if you are using any of such extensions then is good for you to immediately delete them if you care about your sensitive information.

The cybersecurity firm immediately informed Google about those malicious data and Google removed Netflix Party, Netflix Party 2, and AutoBuy – Flash Sales from the Chrome web store. While Full page screenshot capture, FlipShope – Price Tracker Extension is still on the Chrome web store so if you have it on your Google Chrome browser then immediately delete it.
