Xiaomi is already developing the next generation of flagship smartphones, powered by the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 chipset, which will be part of the Xiaomi 16 Series. There have been several leaks of this line-up in the past that we have covered. A new leak is emerging from the renowned Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station, revealing key details about the selfie camera of the Xiaomi 16 Series lineup.
Previously, there have been a lot of criticisms regarding the selfie camera performance of Xiaomi’s flagship phones. Users and fans wanted a flagship-grade selfie hardware that can complement the best-in-class rear camera hardware. According to a tipster, the Xiaomi 16 Series is expected to feature a 50MP front camera, which represents a substantial upgrade over the previous generation’s 32MP. However, for the first time ever, the company is introducing AutoFocus (AF) to its selfie lineup, ensuring sharper and more detailed self-portraits, regardless of distance.
Beyond high pixel resolution, Xiaomi is solving one of the most frequent selfie problems: low-light imaging capabilities. The updated sensor is also said to have a better nightshot performance, and taking colorful, noise-free selfies in low-light setup situations will now be simpler. This may be the game-changer for social media geeks who tend to capture images at home or night.
Tipster also mentioned that the selfie camera will have a wide field of view, perfect for taking group selfies and scenic backgrounds.
Xiaomi 16 Series: What We Know So Far

Xiaomi 16 Series currently has four different models named Xiaomi 16, Xiaomi 16 Pro, Xiaomi 16 Pro Max, and Xiaomi 16 Ultra. The Xiaomi 16 and 16 Pro are compact 6.36-inch flagship phones, whereas the Pro Max and Ultra are 6.85-inch models. The entire series will feature a flat display, which is also a major shift from the previous generation.
Another highlight of the Xiaomi 16 Series is that it will use LIPO ( Low-Injection Pressure Overmolding) technology. This advanced screen technology enables ultra-thin bezels and an immersive screen-to-body ratio. The ultimate goal is to make the black border of the display thinner than 1.1mm, and when combined with the frame, it will have 1.2 mm of symmetrical bezels all around.
The 16 Series will also feature a triple 50MP + 50MP + 50MP camera system on all models except Ultra. However, the base Xiaomi 16 will have a 50MP Floating Telephoto lens, whereas the Pro and Pro Max will feature 50MP Periscope sensors. Another key difference between the base and Pro series is that the main camera of the base 16 is an Omnivision sensor, whereas the Pro series will feature a SmartSens sensor. And of course, the entire line-up will be co-engineered with Leica.
Overall, the camera specifications of Xiaomi 16 Series look very promising, no matter whether it’s the front camera or the rear. The entire imaging system is getting a major upgrade over its predecessor. As for the launch timeline, the Xiaomi 16 Series is tentatively scheduled for late September or early October in China.
