Xiaomi 18 Ultra Development Paused, But 200MP 1-inch LOFIC Camera Project May Return

As per previous reports, Xiaomi’s highly anticipated flagship camera smartphone, the Xiaomi 18 Ultra, has reportedly hit a temporary pause in development, but the project has not been completely cancelled. According to Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station, Xiaomi is continuing internal research and development on the phone’s advanced imaging technologies, leaving the possibility of a successful launch next year.

The Xiaomi 18 Ultra is expected to bring a major upgrade in smartphone photography with a newly developed 200MP 1-inch camera sensor. This sensor is reportedly based on third-generation LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor) technology, which aims to significantly improve dynamic range, highlight control, and low-light performance compared to traditional smartphone camera sensors.

Additionally, the smartphone is expected to have a 200MP telephoto sensor with a 1/1.28-inch sensor size, which is noticeably larger than the 1/1.4-inch sensor used in its predecessor, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra. One of the most exciting things about the Xiaomi 18 Ultra is the continuous optical zoom technology with LOFIC. Unlike traditional telephoto lenses that rely on fixed zoom levels, continuous optical zoom allows the camera to smoothly transition across different focal lengths without losing image quality.

As of now, there is no official confirmation regarding the arrival of Xiaomi 18 Ultra. Hopefully, the development will restart again, and the device will launch next year
