How to Change the Home Screen Grid Size on the Galaxy S8 and S8+

If you want, you can follow these steps to change the Galaxy S8 Home Screen Grid Size to allow for more or less apps on the Home Screen.

There were times in which smartphones from major OEMs like Samsung and LG didn’t allow for many customizations of the Home Screen. These companies (such as Samsung and LG) had ideas for what the Home Screen should look like and they wanted people who used their phones to be familiar with them even if they picked up someone else’s. This resorted in a lot of smartphone owners switching to custom launchers for their device.

However, as time has passed we’re starting to see OEMs allow for more and more customization options as a way to differentiate themselves from the competition.

One of these customization options is the ability to change the application grid size of the Home Screen on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. By default, the Galaxy S8 Home Screen Grid Size is set to 5×5, but you can also change this to 4×5 or even 4×6 depending on how you want your Home Screen to look.

Galaxy S8 Home Screen Grid Size

  1. Long press on an empty spot of the Home Screen
  2. Tap the Home Screen Settings option
  3. Then tap on the Home Screen Grid option
  4. Choose which grid size you want
  5. And then tap on the Apply button at the top right

Explanation

As you can see, the process is very simple and it’s just a matter of knowing the feature exists and where it’s located. So to start, you need to be at the Home Screen of the Galaxy S8 (press the Home button if needed). Then, find an empty spot of the Home Screen and long press it for a few seconds. This should make the Home Screen shrink, and you should then see a few options at the bottom. On the right there should be one called Home Screen Settings.

Tap on that then this will take you to a Settings screen where you’ll want to tap on the Home Screen Grid option. Now, you’ll be shown a preview of what your current Home Screen looks like with a few options at the bottom. Again, by default this is set to 5×5, but there’s also a 4×5 and a 4×6 option to choose from. Tap on any of these three options to see the live preview at the top change. This way you can see how it will change your current Home Screen.

Galaxy S8 Home Screen Grid Size Option
You’ll just need to look for the Home Screen Grid option after diving into the Home Screen Settings page.

Experiment here for a bit until you figure out the Galaxy S8 Home Screen Grid Size you like the most. When you’ve found the one you like, simply tap on the Apply button at the top right of the screen and then you can press the Home button to go back to the Home Screen. There isn’t a right or wrong option to choose as it is simply a personal preference. Just know that you may need to rearrange your application icons after you change it.

This is because you have changed the number of grids and/or columns you have available. So things you used to have on the side or in the corners may have been moved after you changed the grid size. So just proceed to move those back to where you want them and you’re good to go. Sadly, we don’t get as many options here as we do on a custom launcher like Nova Launcher, but it’s a nice touch for those who aren’t happy with the default setting.
