In order to tell you how noisy your room is whilst in an online meeting, Google introduced a new voice indicator for it’s Meet platforms.
This indicator has three functions, viz notifying you whether the noise cancellation is working or not, displaying how noisy the surroundings are, and letting you know how well it’s filtering the noises. It’s coming to commercial Google Workspace users in the coming days.
Voice Indicator in Google Meet
Amongst all the video conferencing platforms we have now, Google Meet is one of the best ones for larger groups. With Google developing constantly with new features, Meet is able to compete better against Microsoft Teams and Zoom – the other two giants in this space.
And now, taking a step ahead of them, Google is adding a new voice indicator to the Meet the platform that’d help users realize how noisy their room is. Available in the Noise Cancellation setting, this indicator has three modes to display;
If you see a “Reducing noise” pop-up slide coming from the voice indicator, it means the Google Meet is filtering out a burst of noise – resulting in participants hearing only your voice. This popup appears only once per meeting, most likely at the beginning.
And if you see a pulsating ring around the voice indicator, it means the Meet is actively canceling out the surrounding noise. The amount of noise is indicated by the pulsating level of the ring around the indicator.
And if there’s no indicator shown, that means your device mic isn’t taking up any sound. Turn it off and on in the Noise Cancellation setting. Google is rolling out this feature gradually to everyone, and most should see it by the end of August.
It’s not available for personal Gmail accounts or low-cost Google Workspace and Business accounts, but premium tiers like Google Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, and Workspace Individual customers.
