Picture this scenario: You charge your Fire Tablet overnight, only to discover the next morning that all your Kindle books, including Audible audiobooks, have vanished from the “Downloaded” section without any apparent reason. This glitch can also occur when you exit the Kindle app to engage in other activities, such as watching videos or listening to music. This recurring problem can make it nearly impossible to enjoy a seamless reading experience on your Fire Tablet.

Workaround 1: Update Fire OS Version

One potential solution recommended by Amazon Kindle Support representatives is to update your Fire OS version to 5.4.0.1 or the latest available version. Follow these steps to update your Fire OS:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap “Settings.”
  2. Scroll down and tap “Device Options.”
  3. Select “System Updates.”
  4. Tap “Check Now/Update.”

Please note that this workaround may not work for all users, as the problem may resurface despite the update. However, it is still worth a try.

Workaround 2: Sync Your Fire Tablet and Reboot

Another workaround that has proven effective for some users is to sync your device, shut it down, and then restart it. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap “Settings.”
  2. Tap “Sync and Check For New Items.” The Sync icon will start spinning.
  3. Wait for your Fire Tablet to finish syncing; the Sync icon will stop spinning.

To ensure proper synchronization, go to the Amazon “Manage Your Content and Devices” webpage in a browser. Select “Settings” and scroll down to turn on “Device Synchronization (Whispersync Settings).”

Please note that this workaround is not a permanent fix and may not work for all users. However, it is worth attempting to see if it resolves the issue.

Workaround 3: Factory Reset

If all else fails, you can consider doing a factory reset. Although Amazon customer service representatives often recommend this solution as a last resort, it may help resolve the problem. Keep in mind that a factory reset will erase any content you’ve downloaded to your tablet, including personal documents, account passwords, side-loaded content, and 3rd party app data. To perform a factory reset, follow these steps:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap “Settings.”
  2. Scroll down and tap “Device Options.”
  3. Tap “Reset to Factory Defaults.”
  4. Tap “Reset” to confirm.

Please note that a factory reset should be considered only after exhausting all other solutions or workarounds.

Ultimate Solution: Uninstall Amazon Apps from Google Play Store & Disable Auto-updates

After extensive research and analysis of similar cases, we have identified the root cause of the disappearing Kindle books issue on Fire Tablets. The problem stems from the incompatibility between Google Play and Amazon’s ecosystem. Fire Tablets are tightly integrated with Amazon, and installing the unsupported Google Play Store can lead to unexpected issues.

To address this problem, we recommend uninstalling the Google Play Store from your Fire Tablet. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Go to “Settings” > “Applications” > “Manage All Applications” > “Third-Party Applications.”
  2. Find “Google Play Store” and select it.
  3. Uninstall the Google Play Store app.

If you are a Google enthusiast and wish to retain Google apps on your Fire Tablet, you can uninstall Amazon apps from the Google Play Store and disable the auto-update feature. Here’s how:

  1. Tap on the managed “Google Play Store” app.
  2. Go to “Menu” > “My apps.”
  3. Find your Kindle apps and select the installed Kindle app to uninstall it.

Apps downloaded from the Google Play Store usually update automatically. Therefore, in addition to uninstalling Amazon apps from Google Play, you need to disable auto-updates for apps on the Play Store.

After implementing these steps, reboot your Fire Tablet and re-download your Kindle books. Monitor whether the issue reoccurs. Hundreds of users have reported that their books remain intact on their Fire Tablets, even when charging overnight.

Consider backing up your Kindle books and personal documents to an external storage device or cloud service to prevent permanent loss in case of unforeseen issues.
