OnePlus is the latest OEM to support four years of major Android OS updates and five years of security updates for a select number of devices that are releasing in 2023 and onwards, the company announced. The announcement was made during a roundtable event held in London recently. The company did not disclose the name of the devices that are getting four years of major Android OS updates and five years of security updates.

However, it is expected that the flagship numbered series will get more years of Android OS and security updates. While the mid-range Nord series will get the usual two years of Android updates and three years of security updates. This is a major step taken by many OEMs as they now offer more years of Major Android updates.

The official statement comes from Gary Chen who is the head of software products at Oppo and OnePlus. He said in an official statement on the OnePlus community post the OEM will now offer four years of OxygenOS updates and five years of security updates to select devices slated to be released in 2023. It also indicates that this policy will not apply to devices that have launched in 2022 and previous years. He also said that the OEM wants it’s users to keep their smartphones for a longer period. This is why they are implementing this policy of providing more updates to devices.

In a OnePlus community post he said, “As a user-oriented company, we do everything we can to enhance our user experience. With more users keeping their devices for longer, we want to make sure we can offer that possibility. This new update policy will give you access to the latest security and newest features required to power OnePlus’ signature fast-and-smooth experience throughout the lifetime of the phone”.

This is great news for users as previously Samsung announced a similar policy for it’s smartphones. Currently, OnePlus offers three years of Major Android updates and four years of security updates for it’s flagship numbered devices which are the OnePlus 10, 8, and 9 series. The mid-range Nord devices and the OnePlus 7 series and below received two years of Android updates and three years of security updates.
