You can boot into Xiaomi Redmi 4 Recovery Mode very easily by following the step by step instructions detailed in this guide.

Recovery Mode for Android is typically where we go when the phone doesn’t boot up into the regular Android OS. It’s from here that we are given the option to do things like perform a factory reset, install an OTA update via ADB, and more. However, Xiaomi does things a bit differently with their phones, but they still have the this special boot mode for the Redmi 4.

I’m still learning the ins and outs of this Xiaomi phone, but lets focus on this boot mode today.

I previously showed you how to boot the Redmi 4 into Fastboot Mode, and this process is very similar. To boot into the Xiaomi Redmi 4 Recovery Mode, we just need to press a different combination of buttons when the device is completely powered off. So if you followed along in the last Redmi 4 guide I did, then you’ll feel right at home here. The first screen we boot into could have a lot of Chinese words, but the Recovery Mode option should be obvious.

Redmi 4 Recovery Mode

  1. Complete power down the Xiaomi Redmi 4
  2. When it’s off, press and hold the following buttons at the same time. . .
  3. Power, Volume Up
  4. . . .and continue holding these two buttons down during the splash screen
  5. Let these two buttons go when you get to the next menu screen
  6. Tap the Recovery button
  7. Then tap the Blue button to confirm you want to boot into Recovery Mode
  8. Wait for the Redmi 4 to boot into Recovery Mode

So as you can see, the start of this guide is very similar to how we boot the Redmi 4 into Fastboot Mode. Instead of holding down the Volume Down button with the Power button though, we switch this up and hold the Volume Up button with the Power button. This needs to be done from a powered off state though, so you will need to press and hold the Power button at first to bring up the Power Menu. You’ll then need to tap the Power Off option twice.

This will start the powering down process, and it shouldn’t take too long to complete. However, if you have a lot of stuff going on in the background, then this could take longer than normal. Just be patient while the device shuts down and then you can proceed. When the device is off, we can then press and hold the Power and Volume Up buttons at the same time. Continue holding these two buttons during the Xiaomi splash screen.

Redmi 4 Recovery Mode Screen
This is the screen you should see when you boot the Redmi 4 into Recovery Mode.

After that splash screen goes way, you should be brought to a menu with a number of options on it. As soon as you boot to this special menu, you can then let go of the Power and Volume Up buttons. This is the hidden menu that gives us the ability to boot into other special boot modes. We want to ignore everything here though except for the option that has the word Recovery in it. Tapping on it will take you to another screen and from here you’ll want to tap the Blue button at the bottom right.

You’ll see that screen will go away and then you’ll be taken to the Redmi 4 Recovery Mode screen. This page will show you a phone with a USB cable that is sitting right below the device. This is the phone instructing you that you can now plug the USB cable from your PC and into the smartphone. From here, you can initiate any type of restore or reinstall methods from Xiaomi’s Mi PC Suite or anything else that requires you to be in Recovery Mode.
