T-Mobile And SpaceX Partnered to Offer Satellite-Based Network Coverage

Aiming to end the dead cellular zones in the US, T-Mobile partnered with SpaceX to bring satellite-based network coverage to all such neglected places.

As a part of this program, SpaceX will launch a bunch of Starlink satellites to the Earth’s lower orbit late next year, which in combination with T-Mobile’s ground infrastructure, will beam the necessary signals to devices in remote areas.

Ending Cellular Dead Zones in the US

Even after a fair 5G coverage across the US, T-Mobile isn’t satisfied with it’s operations, as it now partnered with Elon Musk-led SpaceX to launch lower-orbital satellites for beaming cellular signals to remote areas in the US.

This is a part of T-Mobile’s Coverage Above and Beyond program, which aims to bring cell phone connectivity everywhere. Talking about this, T-Mobile CEO and President Mike Sievert said;

“We’ve always thought differently about what it means to keep customers connected, and that’s why we’re working with the best to deliver coverage above and beyond anything customers have ever seen before.”

Under this, SpaceX will send it’s Starlink Gen2 satellites with special antennas into space later next year. And they’ll put up large receivers in place in rural areas to catch the signals for ground users.

“It means there are no dead zones anywhere in the world for your cell phone,” said SpaceX Chief Engineer Elon Musk, who also reiterated that this new service isn’t a replacement for the current traditional system yet.

Areas that restricted the traditional terrestrial cellular technology – like most National Parks and terrain will get benefitted from this. Hoping to roll out this service’s beta at the end of 2023, T-Mobile said it covers practically everywhere in the continental US, Hawaii, parts of Alaska, Puerto Rico, and territorial waters.

Initially, it’ll serve SMS, MMS, and select messaging apps that participate in the program, with services of voice and data coverage added afterward.
