WhatsApp is testing a feature that will block screenshots of view once media

WhatsApp is testing a new feature that will resolve the issue revolving around the view once media feature. The new feature will block the screenshot of view once images and screen recording of view once videos making it more secure and privacy-focused.

The popular instant messaging app owned by Meta released the view once media option last year allowing users to send media files that would disappear after the recipient viewed them. The feature is not new to the social media world as Snapchat and Telegram have similar features but considering the massive user base of WhatsApp, it is a nice addition to the ever-growing list of new features available on the app.

The feature when enabled will automatically remove media files after the recipient views them for the first time. However, there is a privacy issue that the recipient might take a screenshot of the media files that the sender sends under view once media. To counter this issue WhatsApp is now testing a feature that will block screenshots of view once media.

As reported by WABetaInfo, the feature is rolling out to Android users only. The feature is available on the latest 2.22.22.3 version of the app on Android for the beta channel. It means that the feature is not widely available for all users on Android worldwide and is limited to a few beta testers only as of now.

WABetaInfo shared a screenshot that showed a message that says “Can’t take screenshots due to security policy” whenever a recipient tries to take a screenshot of view once media files. Also, if someone succeeded to take a screenshot of the view once media and bypassed the security measure, the screen would turn completely black in the screenshot.

Additionally, there is one issue, that this feature does not let the sender of the view once media to know that the recipient tried to take a screenshot of the image or screen record a video that is sent as a view once media. Further, the feature does not prevent users from taking a picture or screen record of a video of the view once media by a secondary device which is also a downside at this moment.

The feature is currently available for Android users in the beta channel for a limited number of users. There is no update on the availability of beta users on iOS as of now. Also, the official rollout of this feature is not known yet but it will soon be available for all users once Meta has completed the testing.
