Xiaomi has officially announced that the highly anticipated Xiaomi 17 Ultra will be launched next week in China. And from the official teasers ahead of the launch, it seems Xiaomi is going all out to redefine what smartphone photography is. Xiaomi has also announced that it has extended its partnership with Leica and said that going forward, both companies will have even deeper collaboration, and the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is the first product of this renewed collaboration.
For the first time in Xiaomi’s history, the company and Leica have introduced a “Co-Joint” model, signaling a closer level of collaboration than seen in previous generations. This co-engineering approach implies that Leica has been involved not only in tuning and branding but also in the optical and imaging architecture of the device from the ground up. Xiaomi describes this as a milestone moment in its long-running partnership with the legendary German camera maker.
One of the biggest highlights of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is the debut of a Leica-certified APO (Apochromatic) telephoto lens. APO lenses are designed to drastically reduce chromatic aberration, delivering higher clarity, better color accuracy, and sharper details, especially at long focal lengths. However, this APO telephoto lens is one of a kind in the industry because Xiaomi is introducing new continuous optical zoom technology on its smartphone.
The brand is also teasing a revolutionary leap in night photography, particularly in telephoto shooting. Traditionally, low-light zoom photography has been a weak spot for smartphones, but the Xiaomi 17 Ultra aims to change that with an advanced optical design, improved sensors, and next-generation computational photography powered by Leica tuning.
