Starting August this year, Zoom is ending support for it’s native ChromeOS app and replacing it completely with the PWA version of it.
This is expected, as Google 2020 said it’ll delist all the native apps from it’s Chrome Web Store and support PWA versions for good. The Zoom PWA app supports all the major features of it’s Windows counterpart and is expected to gain/receive regular updates in the future.
Zoom Prioritises it’s PWA App in ChromeOS
Changing according to the time, Zoom is dumping supporting for it’s native ChromeOS app and prioritizing the more advanced PWA app. Zoom started displaying a banner at the top of it’s ChromeOS app as saying
“This app will no longer be officially supported after August 2022. Please use the new Zoom for Chrome PWA to join meetings on ChromeOS.”
The current native app for ChromeOS offers only the basic functionality of accessing meetings, with no new features available that other clients of Zoom have. This is because Zoom decided to dump the ChromeOS app, in the future, thus stopping passing updates.
Instead, it’s pushing the PWA version of Zoom for all it’s ChromeOS users. This app is more advanced with all the new features and in line with it’s counterparts of Windows and macOS. Zoom ditching it’s ChromeOS app is expected, as Google in 2020 said it’ll phase out Chrome apps on all platforms.
Google itself stopped developing it’s native apps on ChromeOS earlier this year and is preparing to delist the Chrome Apps from Web Store soon. Thus, migrating to Zoom’s PWA app is recommended, which contains all new features and has a similar UI to it’s system clients.
