Unwanted ads can spoil your browsing experience, even if you’re using the latest version of a reliable browser. The good news is that ad-blocking software and extensions will save the day by getting rid of pesky pop-up windows.
Chrome blocks most pop-up ads by default, but here are the steps to take to disable all of them.
Disable ads in Chrome
Open Google and click the three dots, which you’ll find in the upper-right corner. This will open a menu with bookmarks, history, and other browser settings. Go to Settings, which will pull up a menu on the left-hand side of the screen. Go to Privacy and Security, then scroll down to Site Settings. You will see images, cookies, and other options related to browser history.
Go to Pop-Ups and Redirects and disable pop-ups via the respective button. If they are enabled, the button is blue. When you toggle it off, it becomes grey.
Now, you shouldn’t see any pop-up ads when you browse using Chrome.
Disable ads on iPhone or iPad
Again, go to the three dots in the top right, then choose Settings. Scroll to Content Settings to find the pop-up option. Switch Block Pop-ups off.
The process is similar for Android phones. Chrome is the default browser for Android. Open the browser, go to Settings (three dots), Site Settings, then Pop-Ups. Make sure the toggle is off.
Under Pop-ups and Redirects, you can disable the option. To disable ads, choose “Do not Allow.”
Stop ads on specific platforms
You can also block ads in Chrome on specific websites. It won’t work for every single site in the world because some need pop-ups to function optimally.
You’re familiar with the three dots in Chrome by now. Go to Settings, then Privacy and Security. You’ll see a section titled Select Content Settings. From there, you go to Pop-ups and Redirects. You can remove sites that are sending you annoying notifications.
You can edit which sites allow ads in the Customized Behaviors section. Here, you can add sites whose pop-ups are allowed. You might want to do this if you have to access the site and can’t do so without getting a pop-up. You must enter the URL manually here.
Tips to get rid of distractions
If even a single ad brings tremendous annoyance, you might want to look into ways to react less strongly to distractions. Here are a few tips from experts on reducing distractions or at least changing the way you react to them.
Turn off notifications
This is a cliché, but it really works. Checking for updates and information all the time is interrupting your workflow, your studying, etc. To avoid this, turn off all notifications from desktop or smartphone apps. Limit how often you check your email every day and respond to inquiries just once. You should control your devices rather than vice versa. This will help increase your focus.
Create a comfortable environment
Make sure your work or study space is comfortable. This includes the chair you sit on, the music you listen to, what you’re wearing, and the temperature in the space. Comfort increases and helps maintain focus throughout the day.
Set achievable goals
You’re bound to get distracted by little things like unwanted ads when faced with a humongous goal. Break big goals down into smaller ones that you can actually attain. You’re more likely to complete a smaller task that requires focus for a shorter period.
Go for a walk
Leaving your workspace now and then also helps increase your focus. Even a short stroll away from the office can refresh the mind and body. You’ll be more focused when you come back.
Give yourself a reward
Choose a task and a reward (calling someone, eating something, checking social media, etc.) before getting to work on it.
