Google to Shut down YouTube Stories from Next Month

YouTube Stories

Google introduced YouTube Stories in 2017 as a response to Instagram Stories and Snapchat Stories, but it appears that the feature has not been well received by creators. As a result, Google has announced that YouTube Stories will be permanently shut down from June 26th. The Stories feature was originally introduced by Snapchat and achieved instant success on their platform.

Following Snapchat’s lead, Facebook, now known as Meta, copied the feature and introduced it on Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook. Stories quickly gained popularity on Instagram due to it’s massive user base.

On YouTube, creators with 10,000 or more subscribers were able to post Stories, initially called Reels before being renamed to Stories. However, the restriction of 10,000 subscribers has not been favorable for this feature, as only a few creators have shown interest in utilizing it. Stories are short videos and posts that expire after 24 hours, similar to Instagram, WhatsApp and Snapchat.

YouTube Stories provided creators with a platform to share behind-the-scenes content and updates about upcoming videos on their channels. However, with the introduction of YouTube Shorts, more creators are now creating short videos instead.

After June 26th, creators will no longer be able to post Stories and existing Stories will be automatically removed after seven days. Google stated on it’s official support page, “Today, there are many ways to create on YouTube – from Community posts to Shorts to long-form and Live. To prioritize these key features, Stories are going away”.

Additionally, the company stated, “Starting on 6/26/2023, the option to create a new YouTube Story will no longer be available. Stories that are already live on that date will expire seven days after they were originally shared”.

YouTube is now focusing on Shorts, which takes inspiration from TikTok and Instagram Reels. The company is actively encouraging creators to produce more content for Shorts and community posts. Furthermore, YouTube has removed the restriction of 500 subscribers for creators to post content on community posts.
