In an unprecedented move, YouTube Music workers struck on Friday against the company’s policy of returning to the office.
From the freshly formed Alphabet Workers Union-CWA union, the workers say it’s infeasible for them to work from an office with low pay, and some being outside the work location. Asking to repeal the policy, the protesting workers appealed to the National Labor Relations Board to be recognized as “jointly employed” by Cognizant and Alphabet.
Work Strike Against Work-From-Office
Contract employees working for YouTube Music in Austin, Texas have, conducted a work strike yesterday, demanding Alphabet (YouTube’s parent company) withdraw it’s Work-From-Office policy.
They call that Alphabet’s return-to-office threatens their safety and livelihoods, considering their $19-per-hour pay makes it hard to afford relocation, travel, and healthcare costs. Also, they blamed Cognizant – Google’s subcontractor – for informing them about Work-From-Office right after the union was formed.

They claim to be hired on a complete Work-From-Home basis, and a quarter of them don’t even live in the work location (Austin) – making it harder for them to relocate. Further, they allege the managers for threatening their unionization efforts and acts like sending work to other offices to “chill” the union efforts.
The members say they have appealed to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to be recognized as “jointly employed” by Cognizant and Alphabet – to achieve rights to negotiate against Alphabet under the US labor laws.
