Intel Confirmed the Leaked BIOS Code of its 12th Gen Processors

Intel has confirmed that their proprietary UEFI code of 12th Core processors (Alder Lake) has been leaked online!

This comes after a person on Twitter shared a link to a GitHub repository, where the account hosted BIOS code, private keys, change logs, and compilation tools for Intel’s 12th gen family processors. Though Intel assures of no panicking, secured researchers warn of potential attacks.

BIOS Code of Intel 12th Gen Processors

Intel is one of the two main processors we use in our regular computers, performing important tasks with the hope of security and productivity. But it’s revealed that the source code of Intel’s latest generation of processors has been leaked online – putting all of us at risk of cyberattacks!

On Friday, an account on Twitter shared a posted link to a GitHub repository, where the source code for Intel Alder Lake’s UEFI firmware was hosted. The serving account was named ‘ICE_TEA_BIOS’, with the uploader named as ‘LCFCASD.’

Described as hosting the ‘BIOS Code from project C970’, the repository has 5.97 GB worth of files – containing source code, private keys, change logs, and compilation tools – with the latest timestamp on the files being 9/30/22.

While it’s unknown how the code was leaked, Intel has confirmed it to be true via Tom’s Hardware, saying that the leaked UEFI BIOS of Alder Lake CPUs is authentic! These 12th Gen processors (Alder Lake) were released in November 2021.

As we worry about security, Intel assured us that leakage of this code shouldn’t be a big problem! But the security researchers are warning otherwise, crying that hackers could leverage it for potential cyberattacks by bypassing the hardware security.

A security researcher named Mark Ermolov also warned that the dump included a KeyManifest private encryption key – a private key used to secure Intel’s Boot Guard platform, which hackers can exploit for modifying Intel’s boot policy firmware.
