Last year, Lenovo shared the idea of the “world’s first foldable PC” which now it has introduced as a commercial product called “Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold” which will be available this year. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold looks and feels like early adopter tech in a lot of ways. At CES 2020, Lenovo showed how the future of computing will look like with foldable displays. Earlier, Microsoft, Dell, and Intel came up with foldable laptops. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold is going to be one of a kind.
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold is a 13 inch OLED slate designed by LG. The LG designed display is coated in plated and not glass to support the bending of the display. The screen has been configured with different bends and folds. This means the screen can fold half-width wise-looking like a mini laptop. While turned half, the lower half can be used as an on-screen typing keyboard. If using it otherwise, the ThinkPad X1 Fold comes with a Bluetooth Keyboard which is sold separately. The Bluetooth Keyboard magnetically connects to the bottom half of the screen, replacing the on-screen keyboard.
The concept has not changed much. You can still use it like a PC or a laptop, as per your preference. All you need to do is, unfold the screen, rotate it in a landscape mode. Then, take off the leather back cover and fold out the built-in kickstand. At last, connect the Bluetooth keyboard and add a mouse if needed. The leather cover makes the ThinkPad look and feel like a book or a folio case. The cover adds to the aesthetics of the laptop being this expensive. The display will also support pen input and multi-touch. During the CES 2020, Lenovo showed just a dummy to give an idea of how the ThinkPad will work with a pen. As per Lenovo, the pen design has not been finalized yet. The display will work well enough with the touch typing interface.
Apart from this, talking about other hardware and new additions, Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold consists of Windows Hello-compatible camera on an inside bezel. The exterior of the ThinkPad comes with a neat leather exterior that slides back and forth as the hinges unfold. It is consists of a 4:3 OLED panel and a resolution of 2048 x 1536.
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold is said to be run on Windows 10 Pro, which currently has no idea of how to deal with a folding screen laptop because the operating system sees it as a single screen. To overcome this issue, Lenovo has come up with its idea of adding a special application that jumps between the full-screen mode, one screen mode and dual-screen mode respectively, popping one window at the top half and another in the bottom.
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold is said to be available in the mid-2020, but no solid date has been provided yet. It is still too early to say whether the device will deliver the promise. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold will start at $2,499. That’s expensive sure but is majorly the first foldable laptop, so it’s going to be expensive. Talking about its performance, Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold is said to run on a new Intel unannounced processor. There are speculations that the Intel Processor used might Intel Tiger Lake or Lakefield. However, Lenovo has been guarded about the specs behind the foldable device. It is assumed that the laptop will have a strong 16GB RAM and a fast SSD.
Back when Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold gave a glimpse of how it would look like and now when we know the real product, it is going to be a futuristic product. The price will stop a lot of people from buying it but the tech enthusiasts will jump into the platform. So, if you are looking for an early glimpse of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold, keep an eye when it hits the market in 2020.
