In an email sent to some of it’s users, Plex informed that it suffered a data breach yesterday, where the threat actor stole some of their customers’ data.
This includes their email addresses, usernames, and hashed passwords. Though the stolen passwords are in encrypted form, Plex decided to reset them all for good. Further, it ensured that no credit card data was involved in the incident.
Plex Data Breach
Plex is one one of the best platforms to automatically organize your local media library and stream it on any of it’s clients available. Though it got a paid tier with extra features, the free plan does everything you need for good streaming, including some free live TV channels.
But yesterday, one of their internal databases was accessed by an unknown third-party – resulting in the breaching of the personally identifiable details of some of Plex’s customers. This was informed by the platform in emails sent to customers today.

The affected details include customers’ usernames, email addresses, and encrypted passwords. While it claims to have the system under control now, it decided to reset the affected passwords in an abundance of caution.
Thus, it’s now advising users to set a new password to their Plex account while also assuring that no credit card and other payment data are affected – since they’re not stored on their servers at all.
So if you’re a Plex user and about to change your password, make sure it’s strong – by including not just the alphabet but also numbers and special characters. Further, click on the checkbox on the home page to log out of any connected devices and re-login with the new credentials.
