Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1

Qualcomm officially announced Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset at an event in China eliminating the previous rumors that the chipset launch got delayed due to supply chain issues and lockdown in China. A few days back, Qualcomm officially teased on it’s Weibo account that they will hold an event on May 20 where a new and upgraded chipset will be launched. So today the company officially unveiled it’s Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset a successor of the standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset launched in December last year.

Just like other Plus variant chipsets, the new chipset brings performance improvements and power efficiency as compared to the standard chipset and also improves the shortcomings of it’s predecessor. Also, the company announced this chipset a bit earlier compared to previous plus variant chipsets that usually launched in June or July.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 Chipset Specifications:

As mentioned it is the successor of last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset and will be used in Android flagship devices that will be launching in the coming months including Samsung galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4.

Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset brings a performance boost, increased GPU performance, and more power efficiency. It also tries to fix the throttling and heating issues found in it’s predecessor. Qualcomm this time used the TSMC 4nm fabrication process for this chipset instead of the Samsung which is used in it’s predecessor.

The chipset has the same single Cortex X2 core, three cortex A710 cores, and four cortex A510 cores. There is an increase in the clock speed of all the cores as compared to the 8 Gen 1 chipset. The Cortex X2 core clock speed increased to 3.20 GHz from 3.00 GHz, all three cortex A710 clock speeds increased to 2.80 GHz from 2.50 GHz and all four cortex A510 clock speeds increased to 2.00 GHz from 1.80 GHz. The increase in clock speed means Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset can provide a 10 percent performance boost over it’s predecessor.

There is the same Adreno 730 GPU inside the chipset but this time Qualcomm made the GPU 10 percent faster meaning it will now offer a better gaming performance than last year’s chipset. Additionally, the company also reduce GPU power usage by up to 30 percent.

Other features like triple 18 Bit ISP, Fast connect 6900 mobile connectivity, and the 7th Generation AI Engine with TOPS performance is present like it’s predecessor. Another upgrade is that Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 now supports the next-generation Bluetooth 5.3.

The official statement from the company states, “The company’s newest flagship platform, Snapdragon 8+ (Gen 1), is a premium-tier powerhouse delivering power and performance enhancements for the ultimate boost across all on-device experiences”.

Overall the new chipset offers 20 percent better performance than Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 meaning users will get a better battery life also.

The new chipset will be available for OEMs in the third quarter of 2022 and OEMs like Samsung, Xiaomi, Realme, OnePlus, Motorola, Oppo, and Asus can launch their device with this chipset in the latter part of the year.
