Windows 10 was the latest operating system from Microsoft that came with many new and advanced features to make the computing experience easier and more convenient. It comes with a new and updated system tray or taskbar. The taskbar now comes with many icons which can be used to access some of the most commonly used features directly. This includes network, power, input indicator, Action Centre and volume control. However, you may sometimes find the volume icon missing from the taskbar.

In the older version of the Windows operating system, the volume icon is hidden if you don’t have the sound card installed. But starting from Windows 8 the icon is persistently present. However, in some cases, the volume icon may not be present in it’s actual location. This makes accessing the volume very hard. You can use either the hotkeys if available on the keyboard or otherwise you will have to access it using the mixer.

But not to worry as there is a simple way to fix this problem. Follow the given steps to restore the volume icon missing on Windows 10:

Method 1

Check if the icon is hidden in the system tray.

  • Click the arrow icon present on the right corner of the taskbar.
  • If you find the volume icon in the tray simply drag and drop it to the taskbar.
  • Done you have successfully restored the volume icon.

In case you didn’t see the volume icon in the tray don’t worry as there are many other ways to restore it.

Method 2

Restarting the file explorer

Sometimes the file explorer doesn’t load properly. In such cases, it is just enough to restart the explorer to get the volume icon back. This can be done very easily using the task manager. Here is how it is done:

  • First of all, go to the task manager application
  • Now click on the more details button to view the task manager in full view.
  • Click on the processes tab and scroll down until you find Windows Explorer option.
  • Click on it. Now you will find the end task button present at the right corner will change into the restart.
  • Click on it to restart the file explorer.

Now check whether the volume icon appears in the tray on not.

Method 3

The volume icon can also be disabled from the settings. Double check the settings to see if it is disabled or not. If you find it disabled follow the steps listed below to enable it.

  • Open settings
  • Go to the personalization option and then to the Taskbar.
  • You will find an option – “Turn system icons on or off”. Turn it on.
  • A new window will appear. You will find volume option here turn it on.

This will restore the volume icon, and you can use it anytime.
