It was originally available in 2013(early access) and was fully launched in 2018. Like other open-world games such as DayZ, Minecraft and Stalker, this game requires players to acquire resources, establish bases and defend themselves against other hostile players and wild creatures. Even though this game is very popular among gamers, many players have reported that the crashing issue on their PS4, PS5 and Xbox consoles, prevents them from enjoying the game. So, if you are also having issues with crashing on your PS4, PS5, or Xbox console while launching or playing the game, joining the server, do not worry—we have mentioned some effective fixes for you to resolve the issue.
Causes of Rust Crashing on Consoles
First, examine the causes of the crashes on your Console before moving on to the fixes. Several factors, including out-of-date software, corrupted game files, a lack of system resources, or hardware problems, can cause this issue.
Any of the following variables may be the root of the issue:-
- Outage or maintenance on the PSN or game servers
- Game flaw or error
- Internet connection problems for users
- Faulty game data
- Systemic PS4, PS5, and Xbox console issue
How to Fix Rust Crashing Issue on PS4, PS5, and Xbox
The following are multiple ways that have successfully resolved the issue. Despite the cause, these solutions can help you resolve the crashing issue on console. However, there is still no universal fix, so you may have to try each of the fixes listed below to determine which one works best for you.
Fix 1: Check the Status of PSN and the Game Servers
First, you need to ensure that there are no PSN server issues at the moment because you’re playing on a PS4 or PS5. Check the official PlayStation or Xbox websites to see if there are any issues rendering the servers unavailable.
Fix 2: Check the Internet Connection
Check if the issue is related to your internet connection. Find out if you have a poor internet connection by running an online test and if it keeps disconnecting.
If you have a poor internet connection:
You should run a speed test to see if your Console has sufficient download and upload speed for playing the game. The Console requires a minimum download speed of 5Mbps to play most of the online games. Anything slower than that may cause connectivity issues.
If you have an intermittent connection:
Another thing to look at is if your connection is breaking. Wi-Fi connections are less dependable, so if you use Wi-Fi on your PS4, PS5, or Xbox console, connect directly to the router using an Ethernet cable or fix your Console’s Wi-Fi connection.
Fix 3: Check for Game Updates
Before joining the servers, confirm that the game has been successfully updated. You can visit their official website made for consoles, or check their official Twitter page for any updated news. Your Console should update itself by default.
Fix 4: Check for Console System Updates
Before attempting further fixes, check your PlayStation or Xbox Console for system updates. An old system version can lead to several issues.
For PS4 and PS5:-
- Select Settings on your PlayStation gaming console
- Select “System software update”
- Check for any available updates and adhere to the on-screen instructions
For Xbox:-
- Access the Dashboard menu on your Xbox
- Now, at the bottom of the menu, click on Settings > Select All Settings
- Go to System > Updates
- Choose Update Console (if available) > Complete the update process by following the on-screen instructions
- Once done, restart your Console to apply the changes
Fix 5: Delete the Saved Game Data(for PS4 or PS5)
Corrupted or incomplete saved game data can create various issues causing the PlayStation system to crash. We recommend deleting the stored game data on your PS5 or PS4 system to troubleshoot. Ensure to back up this saved game data via PS online/Cloud if it isn’t already is, automatic backups are also usually performed whilst being online on the PlayStation if your game sync settings were configured in this manner. Follow the below steps for deleting the saved game data:-
- Head to the “Settings” menu and choose the “Storage” option
- Go to the “Saved Data” menu > choose “Rust”
- Click on the “Options” button on the controller and choose “Stored game data files”
- To finish the process, click on “Delete” and confirm it
- After that, restart your Console
Your PlayStation system will clear all previously saved Rust game data. This process should resolve the Rust crashing issue.
Fix 6: Rebuild the Database of your Console
Certain PlayStation games may fail randomly if the system’s database is corrupted. Check if rebuilding your Console’s database can help. The steps are as follows:
- Turn off your Console. Disconnect the Console’s power cable and let it rest for a couple of minutes
- After that, connect your power cord and turn it on
- It will automatically remove the Cached Data from the system
Check if the issue has been resolved by starting up the game and playing, if not, follow the instructions below to rebuild the PS4 and PS5 database:-
How to rebuild the database on the PS4
It is quite easy and simple to rebuild the PS4 database. Follow the steps mentioned below to boot into safe menu and from there, rebuild the PS4 database:
- Turn the PS4 off. To do this, first press and hold your Power button for around 3 seconds. On the console, the LED light will blink before your PlayStation 4 shuts down
- When the console is powered down, the next step is pressing and holding the Power button at the front once again
- You need to ensure that you hold your Power button for approximately 7 seconds until you hear the sound of two beeps. The first beep must occur after you have pressed the button and the second after approximately 7 seconds
- Release the Power Button after the second beep
- Now you are in the Safe Mode menu
- Connect your DualShock 4 controller with your USB cable and press the PS button
- Select the Rebuild Database option
- To start the rebuilding process, press the X button. You just need to press the X button only once
- Then wait for the entire process to end. It will hardly take a minute or two
How to rebuild the database on the PS5
- Turn off your PS5, but don’t unplug it from the wall.
- Press and hold the console’s power button for seven seconds until you hear two beeps.
- When you hear the second beep, release the button. Your console will boot in Safe Mode.
- Next, grab a USB cable and connect your DualSense controller to the console.
- Press the PS button on the controller.
- Use the D-pad to scroll down and select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Next, select Rebuild Database.
- Tap OK to begin the process.
- When the rebuilding process is complete, the PS5 will restart, and you can continue gaming as usual.
Fix 7: Uninstall and Reinstall the Game
At this point, if Rust is still crashing, it’s likely that corrupted game data is causing the issue. Reinstall the game after uninstalling it should stop the crashes.
For PS5 or PS4:-
- Head to the Settings menu and choose “Storage”
- Choose “Rust” from the list, and then click on “Delete”
- Once the game has been removed, reinstall it from the PlayStation store
For Xbox:-
- Click on the Menu button on your controller
- Choose “Manage Game and add-ons” or select “Manage App”
- Pick Rust > Choose to “Uninstall all”
- Let the uninstallation process finish
- Now, restart the system
- Then, click on the Xbox button on the controller. The Guide menu will open
- Navigate to My Games and apps > See all > Games
- Choose the Ready to Install option > Click the Install option for Rust.
Fix 8: Try Resetting Your Console
If you are facing crashes in other games as well, the source of the problem might be with the system software of your Console. Try resetting your Console to find out if it helps.
For PS5 or PS4:-
- Go to your PlayStation’s Settings menu
- Choose the “Initialization” option and select “Initialize PS4 or Initialize PS5”
- Choose “Full”
- Then, your PS4 or PS5 will begin resetting itself to it’s factory defaults. This procedure may take several hours, depending on the amount of data on the storage.
- Allow for the procedure to complete.
For Xbox:-
- To access the Guide menu, click on the Xbox button on your controller
- Choose “Profile & System, ” then select “Settings” and “System”
- Choose “Console”> “Reset console”
- You’ll be prompted, “Reset your console?”
- Choose “Reset and delete everything here”. Note that this will wipe all user data, including saved games, settings, accounts and all installed applications and games.
- While you can opt to Reset and retain my games and apps, in most circumstances, this will not fix the issue.
- When you choose this option, your Xbox console will uninstall and restore the system to it’s factory default settings.
- Wait for the process to complete and restart your Xbox console
