Renaming multiple files on Mac was not an easy task earlier. It could be done by using third-party apps, but the process was long and complicated. However, upgrades from Apple have made things quite easy. There are different ways on how you could rename multiple files.
Renaming Batch Files on Mac
Locate and launch Finder on Mac
Locate the files that you intend on renaming
Select the multiple files by using shift and click
Locate Action on Finder window – located at the top. As an alternative, you can simply use Control + click on the files
Depending on the number of files you have selected you will get the option Rename — Items. You need to select this option
On selecting the Rename — Items you will get a drop down. Now from the drop-down menu select Format
You will get three different options in Name Format – Name and Counter, Name and Index and Name and Date. You need to make your choice
Next you come to the Custom You can pick a name of your choice and then in Start Number you need to pick a number of choices. You can pick 1 or whatever you want; it should just be a number.
Finally, click on Rename to make the changes.
All the selected files will now be renamed with the name of your choice and then listed in sequence beginning from the number that you picked.
Adding Text to Current Named Files on Mac
Sometimes you may simply want to identify certain files but still keep their present names. You can do this by adding text to each file without actually changing their original file names. Here is what you need to do:
Locate and launch Finder on Mac
Locate the files that you intend on renaming
Select the multiple files by using shift and click
Locate Action on Finder window – located at the top. As an alternative, you can simply use Control + click on the files
Depending on the number of files you have selected you will get the option Rename — Items. You need to select this option
You need to select Add Text from the drop down option that you get in the Rename tools.
Type the word/words that you need to insert in the files to change their name
Next you need to select whether you want the new word/words to be inserted after or before the current file name.
Finally, click on Rename to make the changes
All the selected files will now have the new word/words inserted in the files while still keeping the words of the original files.
Searching and Replacing Specific Word/Words in the Files of Mac
Locate and launch Finder on Mac
Locate the folder in which the files that you intend on making a change to are saved
Select the multiple files by using shift and click. This process will work only if the files are of the same type.
Locate Action on Finder window – located at the top. As an alternative, you can simply use Control + click on the files
Depending on the number of files you have selected you will get the option Rename — Items. You need to select this option
You need to select Replace Text from the drop down option that you get in the Rename tools.
Type the word/words that you need to change in the files in Find section
Type the word/words that you want to replace with the words in the current files within the Replace With section
Finally click on Rename to make the changes.
All the selected files will now have the new word/words that you wanted to replace in them keeping the other words of the original files which you still wanted to keep.
